Clutch mechanism is different. S3 is on passenger side, s2 on drivers I think. But I think the bellhousings will swap......

yes thats what i thought but you could have a series two bell housing with a series3 gearbox, i have got three spare gearboxes and they all look the same, i am just trying to define them

S3 gearbox will also have syncro on all gears instead of just 3-4
The casing is the same and as already said the bell housings will swap between boxes

it must be some kind of reference number stamped on,i took the number from one of them and here it is 51a0165612d, like you say pobby the cases are identical, and i want to make sure that i put a series 3 one in because of the syncro on all gears and they are apparently a stronger box

The bell housing will swap as long as you use the rite layeshaft.

I've been told that Series II box is stronger, Series III easier if you don't like double-declutching...

I have always ran a series 2 gearbox. Never had any problems with them. As long as you use the rite layshaft
