Lord Hippo
I have been asked a question and need help answering it.

We all know gkn make the vcu's for Freelanders and they're stamped/engraved with what we think is a serial number in the form:

GKN V 405558 01 127 (or something like this)

405558 for v6 perhaps?

Which is printed around the outer circumference of the vcu (outer round edge of the vcu).

Ere's the question: has your vcu got it's number stamped on the side of the vcu (flat circular side of the vcu) or have you ever seen this done?

Might be easier if peeps just post up their gkn number and year of manufacture of their Freelander 1.

This info is required urgently please.

I've seen a few v6 vcu's with 405558 on them. Mine also has 01 on it. It's a 2001 model Freelander so I guess 01 means 2001 but that's just a guess at the moment.

Hi, just checked mine still in the box after refurbishment by bell engineering gkn v 405520 02 384 stamped on the outer round edge , no other stamp markings found, 55reg td4.

I still have the original VCU.

Serial Number is GKN-V 405520 06 369

The car is an 06MY (built in April 2006 according to the info given in ToPix) TD4

Thanks. Interesting to see the pic. Looks like the characters are made up of lots of dots, as opposed to grooved/punched characters.

So I guess 405558 = v6 and 405520 = td4 (may also be the same for L series and 1.8's) so far. Any vcu's which have been reconditionned will still have the original code on them, which still relates to the original manufacture and not the recon date/event.

I guess looking at the codes 06 = 2006, 01 = 2001, 02 = 2002.

The 06 has the stamp on the side. I've seen an 11 (2011 I guess) with it on the side/face too. All others have been around the outer edge. The 11 is a bit suspect though.

Thanks. Keep em coming...

When it stops raining and when i get chance i'll get underneath and what is stamped on the new gkn that i fitted last year

Thanks. Can you also have a look at the black paint? It should be like a smooth paint finish all over as if it were coated in plastic, but it's not. It's paint on metal.

hey hippo your always wanting info

i have 2 VCU heres 1 is jammed and sat in shed and other is only partly working still on car

if i get chance tomorrow i will take a look at the numbers on them both and report back

Thanks. I have the info I need now and passed it on but if others would like to add to the fred with their numbers it would be interesting to see. Looks like GKN were still making VCU's for Freelander 1's well after LR stopped building them.

That's probably because they have a pretty short life.

A bit late but here's mine. My Freelander is a 2001 V6.

GKN-V 404810 0831 on mine,
got it since May 2008 and 180.000km
I know previous owner had a almost €2000 service bill from LR garage before selling it,
I know it included oil and tyres, but don't know about what else, maybe it had new VCU also...
