Hi
Have a pretty solid 300tdi, (few usual issues ie cold starting, rear door locking springs) but otherwise remarkably good for its age. However, the eyes of the wife just see pound signs on the drive and I don't really use it for off road etc, I just like the thing and love driving it about and maintaining it (sometimes!). When I do research on the prices I cant seem to see any consistency and I see tidy Disco 2s for sale around 2k
Is is unreasonable to expect more than 2k for it? Is there any reason 300tdi's seem to go for more now.
Tempted to argue its case and sit on it (perhaps SORN) for a few years and wait for "classic" status
Or should I cave in and just let the market dictate?

If I was selling my 1997 V8 I would expect at least two grand, it just one owner with 48400 miles on the clock, the only mechanical parts that have been replace are water pump and the viscous coupling, both due to bearing failure at 40k miles so other than service parts its original, but for the £800 ICE thats fitted. :)
I doubt u would find a D2 for two grand with similar spec.

25 years is the unofficial time to be called classic in the classic car scene, or use to be, and its a long wait to get historic status.

I don’t usually visit the disco forums now I have a 90 but I thought I’d post on here as I do regularly look at disco’s for sale. Decent disco 1’s are making good money now. If it’s in good condition, you’ll likely get more than £2k formit, especially if it’s in original and unmodified state. Better still, keep it as your own investment. Take a look at eBay and FB marketplace to see what prices are doing. Range rovers are already commanding decent money and discovery 1’s are going the same way.

MO, it is what the vehicle is worth to you which matters - we both have D1's and will be keeping them. SWMBO's is one of the last three door ones, and, as such is appreciating ....

I'm guessing that in a few years, prices will increase significantly simply due to simplicity and rarity, much as they have with RRC's

If that's yours in the pic, with that story, there's no way I could let that got for 2k!

Yeah prices are all over the place making it very hard to figure out a reasonable price, I retrospectively undersold 2 cars in my life before and I dont want to get burnt a third time, hence my caution

Keep it!
They are beginning to appreciate, also peeps still buy them sadly to take the 300tdi out and stick it in a Defender/Series etc.
As for us not being allowed to drive them, I don't think they'll be able to do that anytime soon. The infrastructure for electric cars is a long, long way off, and I don't think the govt could afford to compensate us for taking our cars away.
All they will do is make these no drive zones, but again, if you don't live work or shop in one, who cares. they aren't going to stop farmers driving diesel tractors.

As we are both in Dorset i may have already asked you where you are, but I tend to forget who I've asked what!
But if you are rural as anything then it is unlikely to be where we are, i.e. Ferndown!

You won’t find a nice d2 for 2k and you can’t seen to find a nice 300 for under that either! Think about it for a couple months…. I’ll be moved by then and will buy it off you then :D

If it doesn’t owe you anything, you have space for it and you like the thing, I’d keep it!
Yeah just took it for a run and its a joy to drive, id be lost without it

Yep, my avatar is mine - here's SWMBO's :-

It has improved a bit since then too.

Here's a piccie of it underneath:-

Took some effort to get them both to this standard - but IMO they are well worth it - when I take either of them for MOT - the tester goes under and starts laughing - then calls the rest of the garage over to have a look :)

And thoughts on emissions /MOTs making these unviable in the near future?

As I understand the law, "they" will have a really hard time taking away what amounts to grandfathers rights on anything built pre 2001 - and it'll be next to impossible for anything first registered pre 1998 (SVA) - I'm sure some corporate marketing halfwit will try and persuade everyone ( again  ) that new cars are greener ( hilarious ) - and as Stan says, Farmers, me included, will be using diesel tractors till the end of time, well, unless we sort out anti-matter reactors and dilithium ....... ;);)

Still nice n pretty I see. ;)

I’ve been building mine that long that I’ve gone from wanting a truck with lift etc to a totally standard one!! I’ll be selling winch bumper etc I think. Only thing I’ll have is decent tyres. Think I’ll need to buy another as a donor lol

Tis about the only thing it is obvious we have "changed" - both running 245/70R16 BFG AT2's ... other things are polyurethane bushes on both - and the FWIC / tuned FIP on mine .... SWMBO's also has a clutch servo, but is otherwise pretty much original ...

Think I’ll need to buy another as a donor lol

Been there, done that... when my EDC let the smoke out :mad::mad: ( £500 squid for a whole, but rather rusty D1 - or £1K for an injector :eek::eek: .....)
