Need a little help here…
I've bought my disco early this year, February or so… at the time I really wanted a Defender as it has always been my dream off roader, but funds were short, so I bought the Disco.

Have done a lot of work to the Disco now and I love it and like all the extras it has…but I just cant stop myself for going on ebay and browsing all the Defenders in there…

Thing is…I can't decide if I should sell the Disco and get a Defender, now that I have more funds available…
I probably have around 3k + whatever I can get by selling the disco..

I don’t want anything with perfect paintwork or too fancy, as its going to be used just for greenlanes and Salisbury plain, and will end up caked in mud up to the windows

Ideally would like to get something with a few off road extras as well, as I'll just end up adding them anyway..

But the real thing is… do I really need one? It's my dream off roader…
but the way I think is..they rust as bad as the Discovery if not worst, they'll probably break as often..etc,etc…

Or am I wrong in thinking this?
from what I've read on the defender, the rear x-member, bulkhead and door rust a lot…
but then again..a defender can be taken to bits a lot easier than a disco…
and a Defender…well, it's a Defender!

what would you do?
I really don’t know… I would really like a Defender, but then I think "I'll just be spending more money and end up with the same problems as a Disco, but with a different shell…"

The best way is to drive one.....its a totally different drive to a disco so you need to know if its really what you want....I havent regretted swapping my disco for my 110. Rust is a concern with all Landrovers but you just get on with it...

Yes.. you are right, I really need to drive one...
Road wise and being confortable is not an issue to me, I understand and accept that modification will affect the behaviour on the road and as I use it as a toy on weekend I do a very relaxed drive.. I think I very rarely taken my disco above 50mph...

Im out on the plains this sunday and I think there will be a defender in the group, so I'll ask if I can jump in or drive for a bit...

would you say the defender is a lot worst for rust than the disco?

Sirus, as you have that first hand experience of going from the disco to the Defender, could you just give me a few points/reasons why you don't regret that change?

thanks

Defenders are a lot easier to work on....bit just bolt off and back on again. I found, as you did, bodywork on the disco just disappears and its a pain in the ass to repair. If something rusts on the defender you just replace it. Defenders are also a lot more easier to adapt to exactly how you want them.

Not really fussed to be honest....
I like the 90's as they look more like a toy to me, and the 90 was the land rover i always liked, but having a 110 has the option of loads of space on the back if I need to carry stuff...

i love my defender to bits ive have had RR's and disco's before and few of my mates have disco's there a refind bit of kit lovely ride etc.
the defender is what i think a land rover is all about... so basic to work on and maintain no electrics to worry about as such, anything is do-able.plus you will never loose as much money if you come to sell a defender compared to a disco regardless of mods1
imho get a defender!!!

If its more for a plaything I would go for the 90 as its shorter obviously hehehe. I have a 110 SW which I have fitted van sides onto. That way I have the space to carry the missus and kids but have a decent sized space to store all the crap in. I'm not the best mechanically minded but have found my 110 a load easier to replace parts on. I also think they look a lot better then discos (more rugged).

if you have the money available and its your dream - do it

they rust as bad as the discovery if not worst, they'll probably break as often..etc,etc…

i don't think they rust as bad, but where the do rust its quite obvious/visable rather that hidden under body panels in the disco's case. A disco can be a teabag but still look great on the outside

but then again..a defender can be taken to bits a lot easier than a disco…

very true

and a defender…well, it's a defender!

this is a point i considered long and hard about. Actually for several years. I could have bought a disco much sooner with less funds but i have always wanted the "proper" land rover look in either a series or 90/defender form

what would you do?

done it, bought a 90

i really don’t know… i would really like a defender

well then buy one, you will not regret it

:d

I kin hate the defenders.I just dont fit in the cab.
im going to use range rover foot wells on a series cab to give me the room i want.that way an acceptable driveing postion can be acheived.
with rangie chassis .

defenders are for midgets.

go for it bud no substitute for the best ;)

I went from a 110 to a disco to a 90 and I'm giving serious thought to flogging the 90 and buying another Disco

For what I want. A daily driver and weekend greenlaning The disco will be ideal and be a lot more comfortable & spacious as well as giving better MPG than the TD. I've got a 200tdi disco engine for the 90. But can't be arsed with the hassle of swapping em over.
