My 2000 TD5 doesn't have a sedimenter on - I've read up on here and there are those in favour of them and those who say to remove them.

The Fuel filter doesn't look to be in great nick so I'm going to replace it, but I just wanted to know what the general concensus is, put a sedimenter back on, or leave it off. (the connector was hanging loose and full of ****e so I cleaned, degreased, and taped it up just in case)

Also, what's the white thing under my fuel filter, looks to be a drain of some time, should I give it a crank and see if any water comes out?

white thing is a drain plug.

as for sedimenter then its up to you, some remove them, some dont and clean them when servicing. only ever seen them on discos not sure if defenders ever had them.
 
Cheers, will just leave as is.

When the filter is removed at service time will derv **** out everywhere, or will it just be whatever is in the pipes/filter housing? I've read that the bleed is straightforward, ignition to position 2 and pump the accelerator 5 times... leave 3 minutes then turn over for 30 secs and repeat if necessary.
 
filter removal is easy, there will be derv in the filter so try not to tip it but otherwise no major spillage/loss.

not sure how to bleed a td5, tdis have a mechanical lift pump.
 
it will bleed itself as youve said,as long as ignition isnt on you will just loose whats in filter ,you dont need sedimentor just drain some diesel out of screw on bottom into glass jar to check condition or just let any water if any run out,its easier to change filters if using dirty fuel than clean a sedimentor
 
Sedimentors are great....IN THE RIGHT PLACE. Which is not under a vehicle. Agglomerators are even better !

just bear in mind,marine diesels work in different conditions and most vehicles just use filter as fuel is generally clean from pump

Will a Disco 2 TD5 run OK if the electrical connector is left unconnected?

Reason is that wire no1 (of 3) has broken right at the point where it enters the connector. I can't see anyway of re-inserting the wire so it means a new connector and wires. I don't mind buying one - it's just that it's my only vehicle and I could do with using it in the next few days!

I found the borken wire while investigating a fuel leak which turned out to be the sedimenter loose on the base of the fuel filter (this just a few days after a 96,000 mile service by a specialist dealer).
 
do you mean water sensor on bottom of filter ,if you do just tape whats left of wires out the way and carry on as normal

mine does in the rear drivers wheel arch, on the chassis.
