Hi guys, I'm changing my v8 bobtail back to carbs.

Was efi but only part of the sysytem was there as I bought it as a project, so more economical & less hassle for me to change back to carbs. I like carbs and plus i just like mechanical systems.

Anyway on the throttle linkage there's the throttle cable to the pedal, and another cable that looks like it goes to the gearbox.

She is an automatic btw.

With this second cable do i just connect it so it works along side, and travels the same amount as the throtte cable or is it more complex than that.....and what does it do, cheeeers!

second cable is kick down cable and runs in paraell with throttle cable they sometimes have a ring crimed on which should be adjusted so that crimp is about 1mm away from end of cable sleeve,if no crimp just add a little tension to cable and try it if box doesnt change gear properly or kickdown adjust cable some more

Out of interest. I have not connected the kick down. - two reasons,

1, It changed at times when I didn't need it
2, I did not want to strain the engine.

I find using the gearbox much more predicable and puts less strain on the engine.

ok robrennie, thanks for the input. Its interesting to know that it can be run and will change gear ok without it.
I know what you mean as sometimes when autos kick down they tend to rev the guts off the engine, way more than I would if I was driving it if it was a manual.
I'll try it both ways to see what suits me, ta!

Hi James, interested in your view about kick down.

The reason I didn't fit it was as Eddy described, worried about revving the nuts of the engine and breaking the old girl.

What do you think, is this being a little paranoid - if so, i could always try it.

it needs fitting life of box will be shortened it does more than kick down ,if you want to prolong life of engine change oil regulary and give it long runs

If your engine is in good order there should be nothing to worry about. If you never give it a good work out it will essentially get gummed up inside. My old Rangie gets taken up to red line regularly and it just keeps going. Don't be afraid of the loud pedal!

I don't know if it is fact or fiction but an engine that gets used right across its rev range is less likely to suffer carbon build up and in my experience an engine that is worked hard every now and again seems to run more reliably.

Had a go at fitting it, must be something wrong with the cables as it kicks down way to early.

I'll give it a go when I have a bit more time.

In the mean time - I'll just drive a bit noisier....
