Grunt suggested I post this here - and said Marcus was the man to talk to.....

just joined, and looking for advice. I'm looking to buy a defender 90, county, but I have one toddler, a baby on the way.......oh yeah, and a wife. Can anyone tell me about seating options, ie how can I / is it legal to, put booster seats / car seats on the rear inward facing seats, or what are the other options? Appreciate any advice.

cheers

i really don't think putting booster seats on inward facing seats is a good idea, legal or not

Only legal ones to use are the Exmoor mega expensive jobbies. But what price safety of the little ones ?

Yip, the Exmoor proper jobby fold downs are the only tested & approved ones for booster seats. You can get a legal car seat that fixes with a lap belt, that'd do the baby if you keep the front centre seat. You can get various forward facing fold downs that would keep yer Mrs pretty safe in the back. Your toddlers booster seat would then fit in the front passenger seat.

There are several options/combinations, depends what you want to spend against how much yer family is worth against what you'll be using the truck for.

But no, never put a kiddy in an inward facing seat. It ain't legal anyway.

Have a look at the Exmoor Trim site. Should give you a better idea of your options. Do a search on here too for specific makes & more details. It's been covered a few times recently due to the new laws.

many thanks for the info, Marcus, Chris & Slob. Looking at the Exmoor site (best part of 500 each) - may need to reconsider a 110 CSW instead.

So are the benches in the back of my 110 CSW not much use. I was hoping to take my boy and a heap of his friends out when my engine is fixed. They are all about 12.

The 2nd row seats in a 110 CSW are forward facing... if you've not got those, I'd question if it's really a CSW or something someone has cobbled togevver.

The benches in the load bay which are side facing are basically the same as the ones in a 90.

Cheers,

no I have a second row that are front facing but I also have the benches in the load area which I thought could be used when there was seat belts fitted. Why aren't the benches safe to use?

imagine crashing, in a forward facing seat, you get thrown straight forwrd and seat belt stops you.
now imagine if u were sitting in a side facing seat and get thrown sideways. your whole body will be thrown sideways. sitting forward facing u can brace urself with arms or legs but side facing ur ****ed.

the rear facing seats in the boot of estate cars scare me. u see tiny kids sitting in these when ur going down motorway. wot if someone were to go into the back of you at 70mph??

I wud imagine not much would happen!
it is not the speed that matters it is the DIFFERENCE in speed. If yu are doing 70 forward and someone hits yu up ther back at 72mph the difference is only 2MPH and the damage and effect wud be minimal. A rear facing seat in an estate car is one of the safest, because the most likely accident scenario is yu driving into something - or a head-on crash. Either of these scenarios would through the child INTO the seat and thereby give greatest protection. Why do you think most baby seats face backwards?

baby seats face backwards because babies cannot support or brace themselves and they dont have alot of strength in their neck. the back of their seat supports them and means they will be pushed into the back seat, not slung forward.
agreed with difference in speed but u know wot i was getting at
