Hi guys and girls,

I bought my first Defender last month, its a 1983 90 pick up style, the seats have been changed to Discovery ones by a previous owner and the position is wrong, they look like **** and the battery had been moved to the back I suspect due to the seat covering the battery box.

I've moved the battery back and am now in need of finding seats to finish the job, as I've not had the opportunity to check out any defenders yet I could use a little help working out what I need. As it stands, the seats are bolted to checker plate, then the plate is screwed with 6 self tapper screws to the seat box, the seat belt clips into the seat so I suppose I need belt clips, where do they mount, could anyone please show me a picture of theirs.

I'm unsure how the seat bolts to the seat box and how they lift up to access the battery, also what is the clips at the front of the seat box do.

Give me a shout if you have anything to sell that would fit the bill, need seats and all the other bits missing to sort it out.

Cheers

Mark

Hi and welcome!

An 83 90? That is a very early one, I thought they only came out on a B plate? Could be wrong though...

Anyway, the proper seats have runners that bolt straight onto the seatbox. Early ones like yours will have 2 holes at the end of each runner, later ones have 1 at each end.

There is meant to be a metal cover over both the fuel tank on the drivers side and the battery box on the passenger side which just fixes in using a clip at the front of the seat box. This picture does sort of show the bit I mean.

The seat belts clips are (I think, I can't remember as my 110 is at home) bolted to the seat box.

Personally I'd be inclined not to drive it until the seats are secured with something more substantial than self tapping screws!

Wouldn't take much for the to be dislodged!

Can't comment on what's required (still searching for my first 'fender) but are the original seat bolt holes still present in the seat box under the chequerplate?

screws are just keeping them in position.

in a crash the seatbelt does all the work.

I don't want to drive the defender till the seats are sorted, and although the seat belt does do all the work, the bit the belt clips into is part of the seat, not part of the car as yours is, I'll look like a fighter pilot that's ejected if I crash, not cool.

totally forgot about that with the disco.. haha yes you would!

if you are wondering where the defender ones go, there are bolts just infront of the rear bulkhead bit (behind the seat) that they go into

if you get stuck i'll take a pic

Thanks Trax, do you know where I would be able to buy that part, I've been looking around Defender websites but so far I haven't found any.

Here is a pic of my 1983 90, the guy I bought it from said it was the first year of the 90, it has spent some years abroad although I don't know where, what do you think, its a bit battered but has a lot of character, its also my first land rover so I have a lot to learn, hopefully I can call upon you experts for assistance.

Cheers for your help all of you, I could do with a bit more information from you though, as you can see from the pictures I'm missing quite a lot of bits, plus I am unsure of how the seat frames bolt to the floor pan, seeing as its not easy to put a bolt through and hold a nut at the same time from underneath I can't think how the seat frame bolts down, although thinking about it I suppose the black covers allow you to tighten the bolt down with a nut on the other side whilst they are out, is that right?.

Could someone point me in the direction of a supplier of the covers that go under the seats and the centre.

Last thing, Im going to replace the seat belts as I they are old and sticking, Trax mentioned he could take a photo of where the belt attachments go as I'm still unsure, a photo or two would be a real help.

Cheers all, and anyone selling any seats or covers please PM me, especially if you are near Poole Dorset.

i did? oh well, best crawl under it then

that bracket is what the seatbelt stalks screw in to underneath.

see the wierd metal thing above the handbrake cable? ignore the new bolt, that's what the old style seat runners screw in to. captive nuts.

top of the seatbelt stalk bolts. this is drivers side

same but passengers. i've just been to the beach
if you have a middle seat you put the other stalk on the empty one.

ignore the new bolt as i've fitted newer style seats.
see those screws either side of the new bolt. that's the orig screws that go into the front seat runner and into that bracket from before.
