Morning Folks ,

Am still hunting for a D2 preferably a 2004 Landmark, seen a few on the autotrader and other sites for around 10K with approx 55k on the clock.

With a lot of these being down south I was thinking of getting an independent report done from RAC or AA as I have been told they suffer from Chassis rot quite badly ?? Question is will these guys check for all that when inspecting ??

Also for the 2003 / 2004 Disco's the only ones that came with Leather & Heated Front windscreens were the Landmarks ?

Also if the Chassis does rot at some point can these now be welded as I have read in the past they could not be and were scrapped.

Don't really want to go about throwing 10K away and be told in a few years its beyond repair :frown:

Any advice would be appreciated.

Most chassis can be repaired. Depends on how bad it is and to what extent you are prepared to go to fix it. For that money (bit pricey in my opinion) I would be looking for something with a very good chassis and then get it treated. Other option would be to find one that needs chassis work and offer buttons for it. Then get it repaired as it isn't that big a deal really. Basic chopping and welding.

You can get a Disco 2 for a lot less than ten grand, but do bear in mind that you're talking about buying from a trader so be prepared for them to add their own "premium", and the lower the mileage the higher the price.

The 2004 "Landmark" does have leather and heated front screen (if it's still working properly and not just a couple of vertical stripes). The Landmark was not the top of the range but for a full spec check go to this web page:

www.discovery2.co.uk / Discovery 2 Factory Options / Specification

I don't see why the AA or RAC should miss any rust/rot problems on the chassis, after all it is a well known and documented issue on almost all Land Rovers. Fortunately, it's not the end of the world, or even the end of the Disco; it can be repaired. In fact it's one saving grace of most older Landies that because it was built on a chassis, most things can be repaired if it's tackled before it goes too far, unlike most modern monocoque vehicles which are written off for a dent in the door. In the worst case, a complete new chassis can be fitted - once again for a price.

The newest Disco 2 is now 11 years old, so finding one in pristine condition is going to be a huge ask.

Brian,

Thanks for all the info , I have heardf from a few mechanics some discos are beyond repair as no where to weld to so that put me off. Also is there anything to look out for on the Auto Boxes ?

You will be pleased with a Landmark, Ive had mine since it was 3 years old with 33000 miles, its now 11 years old with 133000 miles. The black perforated leather is nice, I think the cream coloured version would not still be looking as good after all those years.
Mines a manual so cant comment on auto box although I have had to replace Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch. There have been niggles but I find it quite easy to work on. Coincidentally it was at an independent LR workshop yesterday, needed new handbrake shoes and a transfer box seal. While there they put it on the diagnostic computer which showed no faults so Im pleased at that

Thanks for that. What kind of price were you for the handbrake shoes & transfer box seal ?

Apart from autotrader , Ebay & Gumtree what other sites can you find Disco 2's for sale ?

Am staying clear of the Forums sales etc.

Handbrake shoes were £66 and the transfer box seal was £13, you could probably get them much less than that but these were genuine LR sourced by the independent from a main dealer.

I got my Landmark from the for sale section on LRO. 52,000 and £7600 - 18 months ago. It went online on a Friday, I saw it first thing Saturday. 2 people booked to see it on the Sunday, I drove 200 miles straight away and snapped it up there and then. You have to be quick, very quick!!!!!!

They seem more interested in selling you finance than a car. And 50,000 miles? that's a nice round low number....think I'd want to see a few MoTs to verify that.
But taking my cynical hat off for a moment, mine had 63,000ish on the clock when we got it and is older by 4 years so it's quite possible. I think some people must have them stashed away for use as a winter car.

Friends father has a 2004 Landmark from new , its only covered 25K immaculate. There are a few low mileage ones out there just trying t o source them is a pain.

Morning Folks,

Came across the below on Ebay and was wondering what you guys thought in terms of price ?

Land Rover Discovery Landmark TD5 FINANCE OFFER FROM £46 PER WEEK! | eBay

As has been said, this company is selling finance. There's next to no information about the car other than allegedly covered only 50k. I would want to inspect the vehicle long before I talked money, ask for more information about the vehicle and what's the price for a cash deal. Chances are they'll know little about the car and won't be interested in cash. I might be wrong of course ;)

Was going to give them a call then get an independent report carried out from the AA / RAC but don't know how good they are & will they entertain a car that's 10 years old ?

I think its too much for it anyway. Don't like the look of their site as has been said. Who sells a vehicle on the internet and gives you next to nothing info wise on the car itself? There are plenty out there to pick from so don't rush in or waste your money.

Morning Folks,

Thanks for all the advice so far. Realistically I don't think I will find a D2 with less than 60k for sale but not giving up just yet. Apart from the LandMark what other models of 2003 / 2004 had the leather, electric seats, heated seats & heated front windscreen . The last of the models I think were the S , Pursuit , Landmark & Metropolis

I got a 75,000 mile TD5 ES last year.

Lots of toys

Chassis fine
CDL
ACE
SLS

all working
