Hi,

Im trying to reinstall my 300 tdi engine after a clutch change and the manual calls for sealant to be applied to the mating faces of the flywheel housing and bell housing. Whats the reason for this when there is a hole in the bottom of the flywheel housing to allow oil to drain in case of leaks?

Also, the manual also calls for Rocol MV3 on the input shaft splines. Ive got some moly grease, would this be ok to use and do i need to put it on the end of the input shaft that will sit in the crankshaft spigot bearing?

red lithium grease is whats usually supplied in the box I think, but moly should be fine. Its just to help it slide in

have you pre soaked your spigot btw ?
 
Yes I had the spigot bearing soaking in oil for 24hr before installing. Did not receive any grease with the clutch kit so I will go ahead and use the moly. What about the engine to gearbox mounting faces though? Is hylomar sealant really necessary? My thinking is if there is a hole in the flywheel housing what's the point in sealing them???

there isnt any unless you seal the other end of both housings
 
probably not needed but a smear wouldn't go amiss, the hylomar will be so its sealed for wading I presume
 
Always worth greasing the shaft splines, certainly makes fitting easier, only a thin smear mind.
 
Good tip is to soak the spigot bearing in boiling oil. That forces the air out and when the oil cools, the oil is sucked into the bearing cavities.
 
thanks for the help guys. ive got another problem now though! i cannot get the engine to mount back up the the gearbox, i can get it about 1/2" away but if i push it more the engine locks up (gearbox is in neutral). any tips on how to get it flush?
 
I think the answer is to just keep trying. It sounds like it might be slightly misaligned -it may be the gearbox and engine are at slightly different angles and the tip of the input shaft isn't sliding smoothly into the spigot. Some people swear by putting a few bits of (suitably sized) threaded rod or long bolts through the bolt holes to aid alignment as you're offering them up.
 
It's incredible how many jobs a big piece of wood is essential for :) I think I need to start carrying one around in the beast with me.
 
A bit late here but you seal the bellhousing because you want it watertight if wading, the hole you mention would (should) have a wading plug fitted only when wading, you remove the plug when not wading as it will allow any potential oil or clutch fluid drain out rather than contaminate your clutch if a seal fails :) you would use RTV :)
