Hi,
I have a LHD Disco td5 (nov.2000).
When I turn left, there is a metallic screeching noise. All brakes are fine. There is a small leak from steering box - less than a tsp per day. levels all topped up. Any suggestions - if its the box, how long can I drive it - and what will eventually happen if it goes?
Im in Spain - where there are no Discoveries in the breakers yards... my only option would be EUR 1500+tax to by a new box from Land Rover dealer  or get one sent out from UK - which will take 4 weeks...
Any advice appreciated.

Does it make the sound when you turn the steering at a stand still lock to lock or does it only do it when moving . I would more likely think it could be a hub bearing . Have you jacked up the front axle and checked the front wheels for play ?

it makes the noise if I turn the wheels when either standing still or driving. I initially thought it was brakes and took it to a garage - they said the brake pads etc were all fine, did not mention any play in wheels, but did spot the steering fluid leak.

If it does it while standing still . Get someone to turn the steering while you get under and have a listen , would check the power steering pump to and the belt to .

Thx, will have a look. not sure how much play is normal, or even what to have a listen for... what the noise should (not) be.

When I had this it was because the tyres were touching the radius arms when on full lock.

Worth having a look at the arms to see if there are scuff marks.
