Hello my Fellow Landinions
I have dilemma.. recently bought my D2 td5 and sent it straight to the garage to have a new steering box fitted.
My little mechanic friend has informed me that the entire rear chassis is rotten... I would need a full rear Half Chassis (not the small quarter one) the full lot.
Now... My question is.. Is it worth doing? It's only got 127k mileage. 2 owners from new on a T plate so (1999) and the Engine and running gear is perfect.
I know they are expensive but figured I'd be getting all new parts eventually anyway because it's going to be my 4x4 project.
Just want to know if it's a waste of time, effort and money?

Thanks in advance for your opinions. I look forward to you guys making the decision for me haha

Do you have the spare cash to throw at it?

Can you afford to have a car off the road while you play at fixing it?

Cheers

I have cash to throw at it and access to another motor for work etc but it's not just the chassis is it? I would have to get new shocks, brake pipes etc because chance are there all be rotten or damaged getting them off the old chassis.

half chassis ( in reality more like a third) costs about £650 + labour to fit. Brother & myself did mine in a fairly liesurely 10 hours. No brake pipes needed doing, just a repair to the fuel tank support

Cheers guys! I think you may be right. A huge Chuck of cash but like y'all said. It will never need doing again and would kinda hold it's value a little better.

Much love

A galv chassis is very serious money.
Aren't they still more than £3,000 + lots of extra replacement parts, pipes etc +fitting costs ?

Does everything else work, and is it in good condition?
I've just spent best part of £1000 fixing lots of 'little' things - each of which cost £15 - £50 each to replace.
Your engine can be brilliant one day, and toast the next.
If it really is all good, then repair it.
If it needs LOTS of other 'minor' bits, consider selling it, and buying a better one?
If you repair it, I doubt you'll make your money back, (Happy to have someone prove me wrong) but you will have something that you know is solid.

Il have a drive in it tomorrow when I collect it from the garage and have a good think.
I really do want a D2 but I kinda want one that I can repair myself at the weekend. A new chassis whether galvanised or not is a pretty big job and would mean it would cost just as must in labour as it would for a chassis!
Is there any Dicovery 2s out there that doesn't require a new chassis?

I think il have a good sleep on it.
Thank you for all your comments guys. Much appreciated. You can tell you're all Landy Lovers.

Is it silver, I'm sure the silver ones rot quicker @Marmaduke? repair it I reckon :D
The quality item I bought was blue :D

@YorkshYorkshireDallas how much did you pay for it to begin with and how long do you think you'll keep it?
