I'm at a loss at this moment in time. I was working under my series 3 yesterday and found a large number of holes that seem to have appeared from nowhere and now struggling to decide what to do. :(
One or two are big enough to fit my hand in, 3 crossmembers need cutting out as they are made of swiss cheese, none of the previous welding done to the chassis have been done very well and not sure what lurks underneath said patches.

Don't get me wrong I could repair it, I have the means to take on such a task but part of me thinks I should just cut my losses and get rid. And not anly is the chassis buggered but there's other stuff that needs doing too. Bulkhead needs serious attention and tub supports need repairing, amongst other niggly bits that need sorting.

Only plus side to the series at the moment is the engine and transmission. :eek:

So do i repair or scrap? Should also mention a galv chassis is out of the question for now as I seem to be permanently skint. :(

Any advice, encouragement or **** taking welcome! As I've lost all hope on it ever being roadworthy again.

Don't give up on it. Just fix it in slow time and it'll get there. I don't know how many times I've got threaders with me 90 because one thing will break after the other and I've felt like just getting rid but really there's no chance. It's gets fixed and it goes on ;).
I'm sure everyone gets to that point at some time. Weld it up and you're good to go
 
Weld it!

We never go into landy ownership thinking we will never have to repair anything.

If you patch it up and its safe strong and MOTable, there is no need to worry about it after. Galvanised chassis just need less maintenance so ignore thinking about that.
 
I have a similar dilemma... mine failed it's MOT on Wednesday due to several chassis issues - mainly caused by improper repairs by the previous owner. One of which is very frustrating... he replaced the rear crossmember and failed to weld the top where it attaches to the chassis legs because he couldn't be bothered to take the tub off. And another by the top rear shock mount that isn't even attached to the chassis on 2 sides.

The others are bulkhead outrigger repairs which can be patched, and a small hole on the nearside dumbiron.

And guess what, I've got to teach myself to weld again as I've not done any for around 10 years. On the plus side, I can practice by making side extensions for my trailer... and it's a bloody good excuse to repaint it, and fit my safari sides :)
 
Or sell it to me for scrap value and I'll spend the next 6 months of evenings learning to weld and rebuild it!

Actually after the freelander died during selling it perhaps not the best idea!
 
You've done too much to just scrap it! You'll regret it immensely if you do! You've proved yourself capable with a welder on the axles so get on it :D
 
Cheers for the encouragement guys! :) I really do appreciate it.

Not sure why or what's up with me at the moment or why I'm letting it get to me like this. Maybe it's just the sheer scale of what actually needs doing that's hit me or i spend too much time working on it. I'm not sure, but your replies have definitely helped spur me on again :)

Well seen as most of you think it's worth welding it I'll pull the 109 apart this weekend and hopefully make a start. What's the worst that could happen :eek::D
 
You made the right decision and it will all be worth it when you are driving it around with an not and tax

I hope so :eek: Wish i could drive it now but at least it won't be a death trap after it's all welded up properly :)

Just under 5 hours to strip it down to that :D

I used plenty of copper grease though when i took it all off last time so didn't have to contend with seized nuts or bolts. ;)
 
I just made the first start by emptying my wallet by buying all the chassis parts I need! Thankfully I've only got to take the rear tub off and the front floors to do my welding :)
 
I'm fabricating my own chassis parts. May as well :p

Pretty much the entire bottom half of the chassis needs replacing :(

This is what i found under a random patch (that was welded over the top of rust :mad:) was around the gearbox crossmember area.




Same story at the back end of the chassis. Lots of welding to do.

Will also be taking axles and leaves off during the week so i can get the chassis up on a rotisserie i made so will make working on it much easier. :)

If I could afford a galv chassis I'd buy one but I seem to be permanently skint at the moment :(

It'll be reet. I has plenty of steel lying about and I likes welding so may aswell go for it. :crazy: :)

yeah they aren't cheap.. go for it and maybe spray the insides with something to slow it down a bit. :)
