Some friends and I are planning on doing the North Coast 500 in September (Covid Permitting - Fingers Crossed) and i'm deciding what to take vehicle wise. The logical option is my Transit Custom for several obvious reasons such as the ease of sleeping in the back of it when wild camping and of course lots of space for things like a full size BBQ and carrying a Gaebo and Fridge etc.

Then I keep thinking about my P38 RR. It's a V8 so will burn Petrol in the usual way and of course having a Green Oval may mean it decides to break down. It's about 450 each way to the start and end then 500 for the route itself. I looked at roof tents but can't justify the cost for something i'll only use once or twice a year (I have a Caravan for the rest of the time i'm away).

So do I take the RR accept i'm going to need to buy shares in an Shell whilst risking it deciding i'm working it far too hard but possibly enjoy it more (plus handy should the ones going in vans etc. get stuck) or should I be sensible and use the cheaper option?

Although we stayed in a few hotels mostly, It was noisy and cramped with minimal other traffic wouldn’t have been the same in my modern eurobox

Although we stayed in a few hotels mostly, It was noisy and cramped with minimal other traffic wouldn’t have been the same in my modern euroboxView attachment 212500

We followed a route that later became much of the NC500 in a S3 109 Safari. All you really need is a tent and some sleeping bags.
The Transit would be easy and sensible, but the P38 will be an adventure and I assume that is what you are looking for.
 
Ive done it several times in a 74 T2 VW camper best time is NOW or toward the end of september . also did a variation of it a couple of weeks ago with a couple of frends in a 1930 model A hot rod with a flathead V8 and early running gear. with no hickups .. great trip but forget it being 500 miles, more like double that if you really want to take advantage of the scenery. Indeed we never really do the east coast, being from the east coast weve seen it before but the west is a whole different ball game ..

im not gonna interfere with the OPs thread but this is another shot of the hot rods on tour on route from Lochinver to Inverness , at this time of year the roads are quiet :)
