I've only come across the term sawtooth on here too, and only seen it on the rears of freelanders...I belive so I've read, the cause is the rear wheels are being draged, and cause this...due to ratios, ie new front tyres on the front and not on the back, or the vcu is fooked,

can't explain the sawtooth effect on the fronts though?
 
I got it a bit on the back, strangely it was when they were pumped up a bit hard. I would of assumed it would have had the opposite effect but as soon as I dropped the pressure they smoothed of again. Very strange
 
Alignment would be my guess, maybe find a good place to do a 4 wheel check

This has happened to my and it was front tracking - at type tyres are more prone to it.

Also can't see that a stiff VCU would cause this on the front. And on a different not if you have a new VCU with only 40k can't see it bing overly stiff, remember there is always going to be some resistance it's the nature of the drive line

that would be great MHM if some body did have a copy of the recall I learned about it about 10 years ago from the local LR dealer next time I go in I will ask if I remeber
 
I wonder if the Geolanders are more susceptible to this?

I had Geolanders on mine...195/80/15 iirc and while they were pretty good value tyres in many respects, I was NOT impressed with their wear rates.
I started with 4 new ones, all of which showed saw-tooth edges to some extent or another pretty quickly. As the fronts wore, I bought a new pair to go on the rear and moved the old rears to the front and the new pair were no better. All 6 lasted significantly less miles than the 4 Nexens I had on before.

I have since changed to 16" alloys, which came with Federal road tyres, which are...well, startlingly good on the road with very impressive grip, but completely gash off-road, unable to cope even with a wet grassy slope.

VCU is stiff in comparison to results others have posted. I've found a receipt for 2 new front tyres fitted 2006. This has made it fail prematurely. The date codes on the tyres corroborated that, sadly :(

Ahh bad luck dude, I'm always surprised when tyre places argue with me over having the new tyres on the back - every time.

A well looked after VCU can last a long time, I am just replacing the one on my td4 with 160k on the clock, only really got tight in the last 10- 20k got to be a record :)

yu have heard that Freelanders are great and the problems are only caused by poor maintenance? :bolt:

Funny.
Seriously though. If the 2nd owner had bothered to read the handbook concerning tyre placement then the VCU wouldn't be knackered at 40K miles. Luckily it looks like the IRD and diff have escaped damage, the front drive shafts were worn out though.
Then a 31K miles the same owner let the coolant run out giving the obvious subsequent HGF. This was partially repaired by a spanner monkey. New HGs were fitted along with a new thermostat O ring.
20 miles later the engine boiled over again. The owner was told that a new engine was needed and given a silly quote for that. At this point I found the Freelander for sale cheap, so I bought it.
I swapped the engine for one I had. So far,so good.
The reason the original engine overheated after the new HGs were fitted, the thermostat had stuck shut but the spanner monkey didn't bother changing that!! Like I said muppets ;)
 
That's why I do all my repairs on the 3 vehicles we own....if anyones gona fook them up, its gona be me...:confused::what::D

Just checked mine.....rubbing my hand across the back tyres I can feel a jaggedness when rubbed front to back......the fronts seem to be more worn round the edges too....120k miles and looks like the original VCU......does not seem any tighter on full lock than when I bought it though?.......
