I have a MY 2000 Vogue P38.
My existing Mk.2 Carin Sat Nav unit has been replaced with a Mk.3 from a MY 2002 L322. The system appears to be functioning, but navigation position of vehicle is a few KM out and I am unable to access the "Set" button.
On start up, there is an option of a "code" input (I believe this is the "service" code required to make adjustments to the unit). After inputting the "code" there is a "deactivate" button and a "change" button. I assume I need this code to get the Sat Nav up and running?
I managed to to contact VDO (Continental Corporation now) in Germany and they gave me the "service code" for BMW (6330) and stated it should work on Land Rover vehicles as well.
No luck at all when trying to use this code to "deactivate" the unit!

Can anyone supply this code for Land Rovers, or advise in fact if I need this code to get the Sat Nav working properly, or does a Mk.3 unit from a L322 not work in a P38 with the Mk.2 one?

I also have a 2000 p38. My MK2 Carin unit failed (well the dogs pressed the eject button and bit off part of the disk the remainder popped back in and destroyed the unit! - silly design placing it where there may be dogs!) anyway I tried a BMW Mk3 unit, worked great inc split screen but no voice navigation (different wiring) also tried a MK4 very good functions but dreadfull screen resolution (my screen not up to it) and very faint sound. Then I tried a Land Rover MK3 unit that was out of an L322 think this was YIB00040 this came by post from France so obviously everything was in French, I had assumed badly that I would be able to change the language but as the 'set' button was grayed out no way. And didn't know anyone with a L322 to put it in to change the settings. Eventually settled on a new Land Rover YIB000110 Mk3 unit, (I think that was the product code), got it from navman@blueyonder.co.uk This is the final upgrade that works perfectly in my P38. Was made for Land Rover so this is the one you want - my opinion is forget anything else, and its far better than the MK2 unit you and I originally had!. There is now a guard over the eject button!!

Stopover, thanks for your prompt and very informative post.

The most important information for me is that the Mk.3 unit will operate with the old Mk.2 in dash controls. I have a friend with a 2002 L322, so will pay him a visit and see if I can access the "Set" button using his vehicle.

When you plugged in your new Mk.3 unit, was it just "plug and play", or did you have to put in a "service code" or use the "Set" button to get it to operate?

I love the "dogs" story! They must have been pups at the time the 'disaster' occured? I have a Staffie X Ridgeback who is with me in the car most days, on a cushion right next to the Sat Nav unit, but he was 4 years old when I got the car, so was never tempted to "sharpen his teeth" on the eject button or CD! In fact for the past 6 months the two wire lumes have been hanging loose in the empty unit compartmrnt, and he has not had a go at them!

When I put in the new MK3 everything worked as it should. Upgrading to a MK3 is not quite plug and play but very nearly. On your MK2 you should have just two plugs on the unit Blue and Purple the wiring that goes to these plugs has a third (black) connector that goes into a small silver box that sits (if I remember correctly) just above your existing unit. Its a Trimble that sorts out the satelite signals which come from a small reciever underneath the passenger air plenum, you don't need to worry about that though but from the reciever is an aerial lead (black and thin) that plugs into the Trimble unit. When you get a MK3 unit you will see that in addition to the two blue and purple plugs there is a plug in the back to take 'that' aerial. You won't need the Trimble as the Mk3 unit has one built in. You sometimes see them on ebay for about £25 ish. Just take the aerial lead off the Trimble and push it onto the plug on the new MK3. The black plug that was in the Trimble needs to be left off.
As it means you need to remove the whole side trim to get to the Trimble its a nuisance getting the seat release button to fit back in its hole !

Just remembered you asked about a 'code' well I have never had to use a code at all so I would forget that. When you put in a sat unit you normally just put in a navigation disk, it should self load. When you switch on the ignition you should get the menu screen and off you go. Main thing to remember with these units is to wait until the red light on the nav unit have stopped flickering and have gone out before you remove the battery or change a disc. You will get used to the young lady saying "If posible make a U turn!"
 
Managed to put the black "antenna" lead off the Trimble into the back of the Mk.3 unit. I now have navigation, but no voice ivstructions.

Will go and see my mate with the L322 to try to access the "Set" button

My experience with mine means you will probably not get the voice function to work as the wiring to the plugs is different on the unit you have. But navman told me he could provide a small loom and a seperate small speaker to overcome that?? You won't get the sound system muting during the voice directions, as it bypasses the DSP amp, but it would be better than nothing. Probable worth droping him an email and see what he says? There was a discussion on this forum long ago, try a search for 'no voice' or variations.

I did look into doing something similar but never tried it as I wanted full functionality. But was told thet on the purple plug the two twisted wires Pin2 (yellow with orange trace is the speaker negative) and Pin4 (orange with yellow trace is the speaker positive) and that these go to the DSP amp for the sound system. BUT I never tried it and I am not advising you to do it, best to get a known solution. It would be easy to blow your nav unit !!

Yes my wife is also a Sat Nav, she Sats there and Navs. Ho Ho, Very funny!

It just so happens that some cars came with the factory sat nav fitted, these sat navs may be 12+ years old now but if you have one its nice if it works!! otherwise you have a big screen in the dash doing nothing. And believe it or not they can be very useful ! Not having the wife (or other) on every journey means 'you' have to read the map. Not easy on a motorway or middle of a city with a complicated one way system. Bought a second hand flat screen for my computer the other day and the sat nav took me right to the chaps door, saved massive amout of time as it was in some back streets and the street wasn't on my printed map. Can't afford to have a street guide to every town or city I go to.
Modern sat navs are getting much better even showing a live picture of bottle necks ahead etc, even my smart phone has navigation. But its very comforting to have the Rang Rover sat nav lady reminding me that the motorway will split in a mile - ever missed a morway junction?
Suggest you get a Tom Tom or Garmin soon change 'your' tune! :doh:
