Going to convert a sankey trailer to a mobile camper....tent on top type thing.
Does anyone know:
Will Defender wheels fit on? and are there any ball/pin combos to bolt on the back of the landy that will take the nato ring as most dont seem to be big enough, don't really want to use a nato hitch as i still need to tow normal trailers.
Cheers

your defender wheels will fit but don't go to big with the tyres , sankeys sit quite high as standard ... what tent you gonna use ? that aint a bad idea , had'nt thought of that ...

Nato rings are too fat for a standard ball & pin hitch. I think a standard NATO ring hitch is 78mm diametre.

i think thier are some five tonne pin hitches you can buy that will connect to them but i would'nt trust them , like redhand said they are quite large rings .

Ah've seen a hitch like the one on the right but with a ball on where the jaw closes onto.....

.. but can't remember where, or if it would be any good either;)

can't help you with that one , i've only ever seen the ones on the left before . there are two types tho , the one that swivels and the fixed one , i think with stuff like this it's better to use the correct ones .

don mine already, with the tent on top, as for wheels, have thought about some modulars, running with the same tyre as landy, makes it easy if i get a puncture and use the spare from lANDY

Bradley hitches look like NATO hitches and will take a nato ring.

Looks nice Ada. Might have to think about doing something similar myself, next year.

Picked up a genuine NATO hitch today. Going to fit it to the cross member but does it go straight on, the holes look good but seen some pictures with a strenghtening plate or reinforcement bracket on the back.
Just need to find some bolts.

There should be 4 holes on yer rear x-member for the hitch, depending on what type of bracketry ye've got on, they might be covered. Ye'd probably be better with the back plate as well;)
Here's my one with the plate...

I have a dixon bate drop/adjustable hitch on at the mo, the holes for the nato hitch are threaded so those type of bolts won't go, think i'll just modify the bit you move up and down to take the new hitch, holes are close maybe just a bit of filing will do it.

Hi, not sure if this thread is still running. I have a Sankey camping trailer still with the NATO towing eye. I also have a 90 with a NAS style rear step. I have fitted my NATO hitch onto this. The trailer tows great but it sits at an angle. It looks like you can remove the towing eye from the trailer and re-place it onto the bottom of the squar bar "A" frame. Obviously you would loose breaking.

Anyone seen any clever way of doing this?? and still have breaks??

The easy answer is to remove the NAS step and bolt the NATO Hitch onto the top holes on the rear cross member, but who does things the easy way????
