Its just a patch on the chassis I thought, so out with the hammer to check prior to MOT...

Whats the thoughts on this ? It looks to me like the new xmember won't come forward far enough to get to new metal.....

This makes me sad.....

You can get rear cross members that include the suspension mounts, although they're about £350!

I'm curious to see what you do as I was thinking is my chassis repairable and yours is definitely worse (sorry!). So if you manage to repair this, then i should be OK.

I'd agree - but that rot in isolation is fixable. Unless its been in the sea, then the chances are that said rot is not isolated, :( and it will depend on what the rest of the chassis is like - especially the spring mounts, and the trailing arm mounts ( have a good look at these) .. If it's the same as the piccies on both sides, I fear it may be too far gone.....:(

( need more piccies of the chassis forward of this to advise properly )

weirdly, the nearside is fine - the offside had been previously patched, but no drain hole! That would explain the rot..... the xmember is past its best and is holed by the rear step mounts, so may as well do it all....

island4x4 do a 1/4 chassis for £210+vat, and that includes the roll bar mounts, so comes far enough forward to repair :)

Now for a cost to fit...... :(

Ah! I've done SWMBO's D1, on the nearside..... due.... to, yep you guessed, a blocked drain hole - the rest of the chassis was fine.... i still shot blasted it though (!).

If you can't DIY, then get a price to change the chassis - it might, depending on how long you intend to keep the vehicle, be more cost effective

we'll see - off to the local landy independent tomorrow - they want to see it before quoting....

I don't know how far you think you might go, but I have a rear chassis rail that could help. It is just the rail, drilled for everything, but nothing welded to it. I've got four actually, but happy to sell one.

Im assuming the drain hole was blocked by rust flakes? if so I would be thinking whats the rest like inside?
Ebay cheap boroscope for a look inside the chassis might be 30 quid well spent

Nope - drain hole was blocked by previous owners welded on plate....... :)

I would still say thats a pretty unusual place to rot out, unless its been dunked launching boats etc, then to weld a patch over the drain hole!

I thought that, there's a patch on the other side, but thats solid. I suspect mud build up in its previous life in Norfolk and blocked holes.

I'll know more later today after a visit to the local Indy - he seemed unfazed by the thought of a 1/4 chassis, but if its more than that I haven't got the money or time to rebuild on a new chassis.....
