Hi All,

I loved my P38 soooooo much I've now upgraded to a 03 Plate TD6.

Already I've noticed a problem unfortunately but still love the cars!

I drove it back from Wales yesterday and noticed that the engine sounded like a giant hair dryer as I accelerated. I'm guessing its the SAI staying on all the time???

I'd like to get this sorted as when I pull away from the lights small children cry and cyclists call me all the names under the sun because they think I'm going 200mph!

Have searched the forum but wasn't to sure what I was searching for so feel free to point me at a thread if there's one already.

So is it staying engaged all the time ?

It should stop after a couple of seconds when revs pick up from idle

It's really loud and I did notice this morning when I went out it did it for few seconds then stopped but once I'd been out for a while and stopped for derv when I drove off it was on all the time?
 
I'm going to have a look in the morning and see if there's a relay the same that I can swap over. It might be clicking on and not going off??
 
I didn't know there was an SAI on the L322. Are you sure it isn't just the viscous fan stuck on. Seems a common fault. Mine sticks on occasionally but I find giving it a sharp rev or hanging on to a low gear will force it to release.
 
The fan is not controlled electronically from what I can remember

It's controlled by an oil lubricant (forgot the proper name) viscous fan ?

When the engine gets hot, the oil thickens and engages drive to the fan. As the engine cools it then thins and disengages.

I'm pretty sure this is the correct explanation

I have heard before about it getting stuck on

More likely the VC Fan is stuck....

The L322 does have Secondary Air Injection....I know the Petrol model does as I had to remove the pipe to access the water pump..!!

Didn't realise the Diesel had it too..!!

EDIT: Can't see any mention of SAI system on the Diesel in RAVE - I could be missing it, but I am not sure it has SAI fitted!

If you look at the front of a viscous fan, you will see a coiled bi-mettalic strip attached the a shaft going into the centre of the fan. This operates variable vanes in the viscous coupling to cause the fan to progressively lock up as the temperature rises, the operating shaft, as with most things from LR corrodes and sticks excacerbating an overheating problem, whereas my electric fans mod uses top hose temperature so will always operate when needed:)

I don't think it has SAI as I can't find the pump in the bay.

Am I right in thinking you can hold the fan still with a pry bar once it's up to temperature? I seem to remember doing this years ago on my 5 series BMW.

If I can I could hold the fan and give it a rev to see if the jet engine feature stops?

I'll change the viscous anyway and see how that goes.

Where would I find the condenser? Is there a fuse I can take out to see if it stops?

That would have to be a fecking huge fan to be as loud as he says it is over the diesel knock!!..:eek:

My condensor fans are audible, but only from the outside and within 12" on the grill!

You will need RAVE...as this will give you all the manuals and schematics you seek :D

The fan on my mates L322 diesel is the biggest diameter electric fan I've ever seen on a car and the twin fans on my P38 make an amazing amount of noise on full speed. Maybe yours have never run at more than half speed, you sure you have more than one?

Yes when the fan is engaged it is very loud indeed.

Sounds like a Boeing 737 taking off ! Seriously !!

Only for a couple of seconds though until it stops

It's not on when idel it's just when I'm on the accelerator.

I've got a copy of rave somewhere but it might be too old so ill need to update it.

If it does it today ill get a quick video of it as that will probably give you a bit more to go on.
 
Blimey I didn't realise the couplings were £120!!!

Think ill give a second hand one a go first.
 
Went out to listen to mine....

Can see the fan running, barely audible, no roar just a nice little hum....

It's probaly just windmilling with the airflow from the viscous, on full speed they sound really loud, is it just one fan on yours, it certainly is on the diesel?
