Hi, um assuming it's ok to carry a load of post Crete bags, upto 380kg in the back of our defender 90,

Does anyone know what the maximum safe weight is in carrying items in the back? Not trailer weight.

The journey is about 30miles with 1/2 a mile being offroad/farm track

Cheers

taken from wikipedia so not sure how accurate it is;

Today's Land Rover Defender model has a 1-tonne payload, making it a stand-alone expedition vehicle. The Defender's unique combination of thrifty fuel consumption and generous payload means that while comparable vehicles (Mercedes G-Wagon, Mercedes Unimog, Land Cruiser, Jeep, etc.) sometimes match the Defender in off-road driving performance, the Defenders payload advantage permits greater independence of fuel and water resupply points. For example, with one driver, one passenger, and food and clothing supplies, a stock Turbo Diesel Defender 110 has the payload and fuel consumption ability to enable it to carry 30 jerrycans of fuel and water and attain an off-road driving range of over 4,000 km (2,500 mi) lasting 10 days.

wow hang on here. The 1st response is for a 110 for a start.

what model 90 do you have? how much stuff do you have attached to it and is it standard suspension?

most 90's have a gross weight of 2500kg. stock standard kurbweight in the region of 1750kg giving a potential payload of 750kg.

bear in mind this is complete payload not 750kg swinging off the back of the door. The trouble with the 90 is that the main loadbed is over the rear axle and not infront of it.

you should be fine with 350-400kg, load it right up against the bulkhead and evenly. make sure your tyres are inflated properly and your suspension is up to the task.

hope this helps

I often carry 1/2ton of 25kg bags in my 90 with no problems, I wouldnt worry to much ive also moved a ton on a few times over a distance of approx 10miles

Well 620kgs of scrap steel dont like going over 25mph in the back of my 90 !!! - tends to wander quite badly ......... :eek: :eek:
but such a smooth ride tho for the 10 mins drive to the scrappy :)

My workshop manual says about me 90 with hd springs that it weighs 1572kg, and max weight over the back axle is something like 960kg, which is good enough :)
