Trying to get a S3 with the old 2.25 diesel running that has been sat for years, the lift pump valves were stuck so freed them off and got it to prime through the filter and down to the injector pump, it will bleed through the pump bleed screw but nothing out of the bleed screw on the cover housing. getting a small amount out of the injector pipes but not enough to make any smoke.

Looking at the piping, it has a line from the top of the filter which T's into the injector leak off pipes, it seems to me that most of the priming with the lift pump just goes down this pipe and back to the tank?
Does that sound right?

I think that only feeds back into the filter what the injectors dont use, ie spill pipe so wont effect the bleeding.
Iirc the cav pump has two bleed screws?

not sure about that one , I just used to prime the 2 screws as lynall mentioned , not sure if you prime it will go into spill rail or if you need the injector pump and engine running to get diesel out of high pressure pipes
So it’s turning over and trying to start, is heater plugs working

I can get fuel out of the first bleed screw but not out of the one that the book says bleed second, yes turning over ok and glow plugs working but I am sure not enough diesel is getting to the injectors, it hasn't run for years so i wonder if the pump is stuck, maybe the shut of stuck.
Just had a someone go and check there piping and it sounds like mine is piped correctly.

I guess if the fuel, shut of lever moves ok it’s not stuck but should be in correct position for running ,
You can remove injectors and keep, them connected to pipes with a bit of twisting to check the spray pattern while some one turns engine over , keep away from high pressure spray

Thanks for all the replies very useful, spent the afternoon bleeding it, spinning it over with booster on the battery, swapped the lift pump for another just in case but not one drop coming out of the injector pipe fittings on the pump, thought i had better check that inlet filter gauze but its missing, tried again and nothing. As its not in good condition and I don't know any of the history I decided to just get rid of it.
However! just looked at a tractor manual with same pump and the end cover has a regulating valve in it and this has to move to allow for priming so I wonder if its stuck due to running without a filter gauze, so it gets one more chance or else its the hedge or even worse fleabay! Cant waste anymore time on it I only wanted to get it running to move it as its always in the way..

Give rochester city diesel a ring, Peter is the guys name, funny bugegr but can be helpful if you ask nicely.

If there is fuel at the bleed screw on the pump body, there is no problem with the valve. It is moving.
Sometimes, it is quite tricky to get fuel out of the screw the mechanical governor housing. I think this is because of the way the pump is mounted on a Series, air can easily be trapped in the governor housing.
I would remove the screw altogether, and spin the engine a bit on the starter, see if some comes out.

If it does come out, replace the screw, and try same again but close the bleed screw while the engine is still turning.

If you can’t tow / push it and just want to move a short distance remove injectors / heartier plugs and crank over in gear
Might get 10-20m per. Charge

I have the same problem with a S2 no fuel to injectors but fuel out of bleed screws...had been lying 8 years here in Portugal all lines and lift pump and tank full of diesel turned to varnish only acetone cleans it out...small filter on inlet on the injector pump might need to be cleaned..we put a slave fuel supply on and still no joy...pump now going into a bucket of acetone as it's a chassis up rebuild..CAV pumps are not complicated look on youtube...

Hi all, Turboman was right the regulator valve was fine, I think something in the pump is well and truly stuck, so for now its run out of time and I have pushed it closer to the hedge but not right in it! back to work and the other projects might have another go and take the pump off next year. I appreciate all the help from you all and its back to the P38 and Lightweights.
