My s3 had trouble starting at 7 this morning , turned over fine with full choke but very reluctent to start, it was about 5 c at the time . Have had some trouble with pre-ignition or running on after turning off and starting fine one minute but not the next. It always starts eventually.
It has a webber carb, any ideas would be gratefully received.

Start at the beginning - go through the ignition system checking plugs, leads, coil, points, condensor, dizzy cap and rotor arm.Look for wear, damp or burning, set and/or replace as necessary. Then look at the fuel and carb - make sure lift pump is feeding carb. Make sure the air hose isn't collapsing.

Sorry I should have said Land Rover has been completely rebuilt, new plugs, leads ,dizzie, rotor . Battery turns over fine and have checked for air in lines.
Possibly some muck in the carb?

You don't say when ithad a rebuild or how much it is used and over what distances.

If you are only doing short trips with the choke out, you will not give it a chance to burn off any excess as the engine doesn't get up to full running temperature and gets rid of the carbon build-up.

Pre-ignition and running on could indicate a build up of carbon, so a decoke might need to be a consideration.

Its been back on the road for a month since it's rebuild and I use it everyday about 3 miles to work but choke is in before I get to work. On further investigation the carb seems to be sucking in air and also had some crap in the top. This has been my first re-build and also the carb/ignition side of things is not my strong point. I also used alot of Britpart parts in the re-build which I didn't realise were so poor.
Thanks for your help.

Hello mate.

I had trouble starting from a faulty fuel pump. Took it apart and the spring on the diaphragm had moved off centre. Repaired it but then put a new pump in, no further probs. It was obvious the inline fileter wasn't filling with fuel, I double checked by 'priming the carb' and that was a temporary fix. Got a new Bearmach one about £20 I think, worth a punt, check your inline fuel filter. Nice easy one to fit too.

I accidentally bought a Britpart coil recently which lasted a whopping 3 months so you're right to suspect them!

If you're idling too rich, that will make the engine run on.
