just wondering if anyone knows what the S badge means on my 2001 tda4
Sparse by the looks of it.
It has.
S standard equipment
  • ABS
  • Cloth seat trim
  • Rear electric windows
  • Steel wheels
  • Traction control
S optional equipment
  • Alloy wheels

The 2001 'S' 1.8 that I picked up had a few more creature comforts, but that may be regional, its an NZ New car, or they may have been options...

Roof rails
Sun roof
Air Con
Cup Holders (on dash top)
LR factory rubber mats
If has the 15" Adventure Alloys

That's a regional spec GG, very similar to the older UK XEI spec.
XEi standard equipment
  • ABS
  • Air conditioning
  • Alloy wheels
  • Cloth seat trim
  • Electric sunroof
  • Full size spare wheel
  • Metallic Paint
  • Passenger`s airbag
  • Roof rails
  • Traction control
The UK spec S was pretty basic by comparison to most off shore markets.

My 1.8 S is essentially as described by Nodge above: cloth seats, ABS, TC and HDC and the original owner paid out for the body kit, 16" triple spoke alloys, security marking (everything!) and tinted windows. No air con, no roof rails. The sun roofs are at least glass - which I think is original on this car, as there doesn't seem to be a separate receipt listing this.

I actually think it is just what you need on a Land Rover - but some toys are always nice to have ;)

I'd love to have a heated front screen on mine - should have had 1 installed when it was replaced!

I'm sure they didn't even do heated screens when my '99 XEDI was made, but presumably the screens are the same as later models so a heated screen could be installed and some wiring made up. Not sure how you remove windscreens because they're glued in these days presumably, but might even see if I can get one from a breakers.

Yes, wiring them in is easy enough: I've made a loom for my MGF for a heated screen that was never manufactured for these cars when they were new :)

As Rob said. Wiring the screen is easy. Just use a timer in the circuit to shut it off after a few minutes. That timing is done by the CCU on models equipped with the HFW. I wouldn't actually buy a car that didn't have the HFW these days. I specifically bought my current SE facelift instead of a slightly newer HSE, because this SE had the winter pack fitted (HFW and FBH). It's definitely a worthwhile addition to any car.

A bit off topic lads I know but here goes  I recently went to the British motor musem so I could see the very first Land Rover series 1 that was off the production line as well as the very first Range Rover off the line as seen in that advert from 1970. I stumbled across the very first Freelander off the line there as well. (Sorry for the poor pics as I only have an iPhone5S)

The photo shows the Freelander with Black bumpers ????? the originals would have been Hatton Grey ...... or some one has coloured the bumpers up with an after market 'Back to Black' type of finish.

The Dunsfold early production car, with the tell-tale black paint around the windows, has grey bumpers...

http://www.dunsfoldcollection.co.uk/collection/freelander/1997-freelander-5-door-pre-production-vehicle#v

It has a VIN of SALLNABA7WA600553 and they quote the first production vehicle to be SALLNABA7WA600477 (which is presumably the car @Madmustang pictured).

However, the Freelander below on the CVC Register is SALLNABA7WA600480 and also has nice shiny black bumpers...

Looks like they had 2 types of bumper - black and wishy-washy-grey :)

I think it looks better with the black ones
