My rear door lock needs replacing so having bought the part I started to strip down the door. Then I found out I needed to remove the window frame. Who's bloody idea was that?
When I removed the frame I found out that the strip that the bottom of the quarter light sits in is badly rusted.

Then I dropped the link from the door handle to the lock inside the door and now I think the new lock is faulty so all in all a very good day.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do about the window frame? I was planning on wire brushing it as best I can, splashing on some Kurust then some hammerite and putting it all back together until funds allow a replacement.

Can I buy just the strip that runs across the bottom of the quarter light? If not where is best place to buy the frame from?

Thanks for any help & suggestions. I thought this would be a quick job....oh no of course it is a Land Rover!!!!!

Havn't stripped mine yet, but rust is startin to poke its ugly head over the window rubber. I was thinking of just sanding back and painting as best i can. Did you get the door stripped down without breaking any of the trim fixings?

Hi meego, stripping the door was the easy bit. last year I had rust on the metal upright between the quarter light and main window just above the rubber seal that sits at the bottom of the window. I pulled the seal back and sanded and painted but it didn't really help. If I had known how easy the seal comes off I would have taken it off and made a better job.

Stripping the door inside is 3 screws and a large screwdriver to ease the cover off which I managed to do without breaking any studs. The inner window seal then comes off quite easily. There are two clips on the inside of the door holding the outer seal on and then 5 or 6 torx bolts, which were tight, holding the window frame. Oh and you need to unbolt the glass from the winder mechanism. I think that is it. Rave has good instructions.

The stripping down was the easy part. It is dealing with what you find that is more difficult.

Cheers Neil. I'm goin to Waxoil car first before they start salting the roads. Then I'm defo goin to get frames done. Dreading whats in there but its got to be done. Maybe try and post some pics of the process.

I was chatting to another TD5 owner last weekend and he noticed I had spots of rust on the upright, quarterlight lights sections of both rear doors. He said the rust is caused by the little horizontal bar you've mentioned, it corrodes badly and rust creeps up onto the door frame.

So NeilT, it looks like I'll have to do the same job that you are in the middle of, so i'll watch this thread with interest and let me know where you get the metal strip/bar from!!
