2004 D2 td5 58,000 miles. SORN/MOT expired.

Still working to try and get my old girl back on the road.

Serviced the front brakes this afternoon and while doing the drivers side noticed the suspension turret and/or chassis spring bracket is badly rusted.

For the condition it’s in would this be an MOT advisory or failure?

With some experienced eyes here is the problem with turret the bracket or both?
I didn’t want to poke around at this point not knowing whether it’ll go for MOT as is or not. I know it needs repairing but I just want to get it road legal if possible so it’s easy to move to repair workshops for work I can’t do.

Now the if’s…

If it’s the turret am I best to replace in pairs and are the original style best or the Terra Firma skeleton type? Passenger side looks OK.

Are turrets a one man job on the drive?

As the vehicle is nearly 20 years old should I be looking to replace springs and shocks too as best practice?

Big if… “if” it’s the chassis mount bracket how big a job is this as I don’t weld and can anyone throw an approx labour figure at me that it should cost if I supply the new parts?

Thanks in advance

Bottoms swollen and burst, prepare to replace the fixings. You can see 2 at the bottom, there's another one behind the turret and the big damper bolt at the top. Clean and paint the spring seats Can do on drive no prob if you can lift and support it, others can advise garage cost

Think I paid 80 quid for 2 galv HD turrets few years ago

Thanks, so you think the actual chassis bracket should be OK? 🤞

I’m happy to take on non welding mechanical works on the drive.

I was looking at these Terra Firma turrets.

I would've thought so with a good wire brush and whatever rust converter you wanna throw on. Quick blast from a rattle can 👌 do underside where spring sits as well

Mine were similar yeah, off ebay tho. Might be a smidge bigger than the hole in the wing, can't remember if you can pass it up thin end first

They look fine to me, and in my experience not be cause for an mot failer.

Yes change them when you can, very easy to do, but if the disco needs anything major for the mot I'd sort that first and do shocks, shock turrets and springs at your leisure.

I've just looked at 2nd pic properly 🤦🏻‍♂️ youre right, no rush good clean up and spray with lanoguard would be fine for a while

Thanks everyone for all the replies. I won’t touch it for now and will carry on getting her ready for MOT.

Exactly this and why I was hoping to take her for MOT before any repair.

If/when you do the turrets it will be worth looking at the lower damper bush to see if it's perished. The bar that goes through it (the bush) is supposed to be bonded to it. If it's flopping about like a sausage up an allyway it needs replacing.
