Hi all

My dad has a 1988 110 County and it's in decent condition however parts of the vehicle are rusting.

The main culprit is the side capping below the windows.

Is it possible to replace this part without having to remove the entire roof?

Anyone care to share the part number as well>? I read that the defender models come with galvanised part?

Thanks

You have to lift the roof, four bolts each side, rear door top hinge, and windscreen mounts. A good time to renew screen to bulkhead seal as well. My 90 has the old folding screen mounts so just propped back up with two posts.

Thanks all....I've read somewhere that you can prop the roof with some wooden blocks. Not sure how feasible that is compared to taking the entire roof off.

if you have hinges on bottom of front screen it better to lift roof up as refastening top joint between screen and roof can be tricky

Only pre-Defender Ninety & OneTen's had galvanised capping and i'm not sure about the later ones of those either (if your dads is a 1988 then the answer is that it was stopped earlier than I thought).
The problem with the painted ones is that the capping was fitted to the tub with only a quick blow-over of primer to protect the bare metal, the visible surfaces were then painted along with the rest of the body but the rust starts from the underside where there is practically no rust protection.

The answer is to remove it, replace/repaint and reassemble with a good coating of Waxoyl on the underside. Alternatively you could just replace with galvanised capping or if yours can be salvaged, have it galvanised yourself (very cheap to have done).

Anyone give me a view as to how many hours it would take a garage to remove side cappings, refit new painted and galvanised ones based on lifting roof etc to my 1992 90. I can't do the job at home, no garage or drive or time over the next few months but keen to get it completed as the rust is getting quite bad.....Thanks for your help, cheers.
