Hi all i have recently purchased a galvanised chassis to start rebuilding my 90 on but i wanted to rust proof it while it was bare so i wondered what is the best stuff to use exactly or a combination of things to stop it rusting for a long time i know waxoyl is the best stuff to use but what one and do i do the inside of it And outside or what ???? Cheers

im not workin off a galv chassis but it will be bead blasted & then im using red oxide & hammerite over that, then waxoyl over the top.when thats all set, engine oil down the rails

Ah've heard that hammerite doesn't like stickin' to the red oxide. Try and get hold of both that are made by the same makers;)

nice...that could have been interestin watching hammerite drip off me chassis ;)

Aye:D
It was me wifes dad that tried doin' up his boat trailer that told be about that... think he was a wee tad ****ed off when he had to start again!
;)

Rust proofing it?!?!?! Mate, you don't need to do that (unless cutting through the galv) - chatting to the chaps at Richards, it'll last about . . . mmmm, 100 odd years as is - apparently :) I was going to paint mine to 'hide' it, but again, been told it'll go a dark shade of grey with use and most people just paint cross member.

Sounds a right pain to paint glav - special galv primer (best sparyed as well) then hammerite . . Good luck!!!

Sounds a bit odd to me too..i thought the whole point of a galvanised chassis was to avoid rust and therefore waxoyl etc was pointless...Foss..why beadblast it?? Surely this will create problems..i'd leave it as it is and paint the x member and riggers myself...

The best stuff to use? That will be ZINC which is what your galvanized chassis should already be covered in. When they dipped the chassis the molten zinc would have also covered the insides of the chassis rails as well.

Yes Buster your spot on.

When I first had mine I wire brushed the chassis and gave it a coat of Red Oxide.
Then tried to paint black hammerite over it. As you brush it on it just brushes off as the brush goes across it so you end up with red streaks showing though.

No matter how much you put on its crap.

I wouldnt mind but I did the rear crossmember and its looked rubbish ever since.

Maybe I am missing something but... why didn't Land Rover just build their new Defenders on such chassis in the first place?

I also believe that the few extra hundred quid on the "brand new" price could effect the sale of BRAND NEW vehicles, its only those of use further down the life of the vehicle who would like the first person to have spent the money in the first place!!!

You will never get your money back if you sell it.... but it will last you 20 years. You have married your Land Rover :lvlove-160: :welcome2:
