Yes it was solid and lined up well with the door post and the inner bulkhead which makes life a lot easier. I've had a quick look on machine mart at the Clarke welders and I'd say between £280 to £600 but it mite be worth looking on ebay for a used one. I've used the Clarke machines and there ok also sealey are good as well, and you can get spares for them if needed. You'll find that when you learn to weld besides welding the defender you will also start trying to make other stuff you want as well. But I'd say buy the biggest welder you can afford, set a budget and work from there. Don't know if you use Machine Mart but if you register on there web site for there email club or buy some bits instore and register with them they send you codes through for vat free days on all Clarke stuff wich would save you a few bob.
 
Okay well I'll definitely get one of those, then just gotta worry about how to fit it on...
I got a compressor from Machine Mart before, I'll sign up to those E-Mails! I'd love to learn to weld, just need to get the funds together first! Thanks for all your help Ian!
