Griff,

For a water tank, have a look at these;

4x4 Water Containers :: 50 L Upright Flat Water Container

brought mine from scorpion, about 135.00 if i remember, excellent piece of kit and takes no space.

cheers, mark

seen it many years ago :D

wont fit :(

Because of the fitment of the mantec shelves it wont fit in. to aid decanting of water, filtration, keeping an eye on stocks etc, Im going to stick to Scepter jerry cans: Scepter Military - Water Canisters

4-5 of these should do it.

G

bummer.

those cans are good. re: filtration i got a lifesaver bottle;

The Lifesaver Bottle

saves buying a whole filtering system, saves £££ and space, and they're really that good.

just seen they now have cans, cost £££, but 1 can could be a solution on a long trip.

Cheers, mark

G - Are you going to do the famous Road of Bones (Kolyma)? We were initially thinking about shipping from Vlad but for us the cost of shipping the container on and then cost of travelling ourselves, neutralised the China transit cost option with guide - hence China transit. We also looked at ferry to S Korea and shipping from there but again not cheap even though container shipment seems to be. Anyway, you've probably looked into all that already. Maybe China will have relaxed costs by then, who knows. And, we'd be honoured sir G to offer advice once we are in Oz though it would be damn strange as we're usually the one's seeking - Imagine!:rolleyes:.

Bevhelee on here is now NFA and also transiting to Oz with his family and 2 dogs but we're waiting for details on his planned route now we have ours - Bevhelee - any news if your reading this????? U coming with us???? (am told China eats dogs for dinner though!). What's the plan?

Rusty - cool site and re-designed since we last looked - we'll be picking your brains. Lake Baikal is a must for us and we think we might try to transit Mongolia in time for Nadaam festival mid-July although our plan says later currently. We might be able to hook up with 2 bikers at Erenhot border at this time and try to share transit costs for China leg. What do you think would be a comfortable transit time through Russia from Helsinki to Mongolia in your view - with a little bit of time to poodle about a bit?
For Magadan etc see:
Sibirsky Extreme » Route

these guys did kolyma highway this is NOT the road of bones, that is known as summer road etc the one that Ewan mcgregor did ,you would need to be in summer after the thaw!!, Kolyma is all weather highway!!

Sasha, Cassie and crew are on the way at the moment , they arein Germany, near Nurnburg . See their website Overland with kids

looking at the spot coverage map , it would seem that there is no cover in that area, dont know if they realised that ?

We are currently in Ulaan Bataar and expecting to catch up with Cassie here in the next few days.

Hello - we're here! Currently in UB. Joined up with Bevhelee this morning. All well but Tacr2man is right - we appear to have no sat cover in this neck of the woods. Sasha - thank you for your kind regards (sorry so late in responding - have just now been backreading the posts). Will keep an eye on what your up to for 2012. Griffdowg - re: trailer vs bicycle - given what we've seen in Russia - both hard work but that's only our view. LR handling beautifully - great fun - almost boring to have a smooth road these days.
All the best
Cassie

Greetings to everyone from China! - Hello! - Hi! - NI HAO! (Bevhelee and ourselves together safely yesterday). Two Land Rovers, 4 adults, 3 children transiting together over 26 nights to Laos. So far we are finding costs very cheap - lovely food, good accommodation. Big huge meal today for approx 4 Euros each including beer! Last night for seven of us only £6 in total. Loving it! :p :p :p. Both vehicles now done approx 30,000km each and holding up well. We're in Erenhot (Erlian) awaiting document clearance for our vehicles. Vehicles with us meantime in car park at hotel. Chinese people we have met so far - fabulous and very kind to us though we can't understand a word or a symbol. Good luck to those thinking about and/or entering the Help 4 Heroes challenge - very good cause. Very best wishes from all of us.

In 1998 we took a bx19 citroen across russia to Vladivostock and also did a lot of detours on the way and we also drove back covering 38000 miles and also had to ship the car on a flatbed with 2 others for about 300 miles as the roads were flooded and the only thing getting through were the trains.
I have since heard that the road has been finished and you can drive all the way now.
The people we met on that trip ( which lasted 6 months as that was how long the visa was for )were the most friendly and helpfull people you could ever meet .
I am still in touch with some of the people we met and when we were in vladivostok stayed with them.
The last time we were there we were on a expedition ship visiting the Kamchatka penisular and the Comander Islands so did not have a vehcle but visited remote comunitys in an inflatable.

Hi Griffdowg

We will be doing a round the world trip in 2013. Looking at starting May 2013.
Don't know what route we will be takin for definate, but central asia Mongolia Russia then down te aus sounds pretty sound.

Not sure what make of vehicle you're intending to use, but in preparation for your trek may I suggest you view the Overlander's Personal Sites category within www.macks4x4info.com - you have a choice of Jap 4x4, Land Rover and 'the rest' for specific vehicles, but any 4x4 travelling your route is worth reading about for obviously reasons - packing, what to take, border crossings, etc. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned traveller, clearly the more you can learn beforehand the better!
