Hi all, and Merry Christmas, hohoho.

I'm in a spot of bother and don't know what to do next.

I'm out in Mexico, the v8 3.5 Defender has been sat here un used for a while. Last run 9 months previous and was fine.

I started her up this time and would start ok with plenty of choke, but then when I took the choke down, she had no power and would stall.

When I gun the accelerator she sounds ok, a bit lumpy, but when I put any sort of power requirement on it, she stalls. The choke also sticks and offers resistance.

I took the carbs off and cleaned what i could wothout dismantling too much that would require tuning, put them back on and she's a bit better, but after a few mins of running, the choke stuck again and is offering resistance (dunno if this is relevant).

When I'm driving her now, she can tug along, but the engine leaps and jerks, seems to gagg on itself and when I press the accelerator too quickly, she'll almost stall then lurch.

I'm stuck really, what are your initial thoughts? Where should I even start?!

Appreciate any help!!

Thanks

Service her. Have you put any oil in the top? Check all moving parts are moving as they should. Its just a bit seized give her a quick once over and she should be fine.

Yeah, replaced the fuel a couple of times, she had about 20 litres through her now.

Topped up the oil in the dampers.

Tested all ht leads, has spark to all 8.

I'm thinking now either re check the timing, although the gas here is **** and it was way retarded to run in the first place.

Or maybe crap in the fuel lines, but surely it would be freed by now, and the engine would cut at high revs??? I replaced the fuel filter.

Ok, if im on the right track, I'll carry on with the carbs, next I'll take them back off and soak them properly. Then put them back on and try tune them.

One would 'assume' that the only thing that would really suffer from a long stand would be the carbs which could have gummed.

These can often clean themselves with fresh fuel flow, but you can't beat a strip and clean.

Other option is fuel pump, but nothing else should really have changed!!

Hmmm, thought about the pump, will keep that in mind.

Other thing I was wondering about was the coil. I may get another one out of course.

Thanks for your help.

check vac advance and mechanical advance are both working properly, it would probably be a good idea to pop the dizzy cap off and give the inside of it a clean and do the rotor arm at the same time, a bit of WD40 or similar in there wouldn't go amiss.

Sometimes if they have been stood for a long time you can get rough running due to condensation in the dizzy.

Thanks, I've done all of the above now and she's loosening up slowly.

Thanks for your help.
