Hi All...moving to the UK for a year or so and bringing my Disco TD5 with me. Was thinking or changing to UK plates etc...so can anyone clarify what is the road tax for a D2 in the UK and what approx. are people paying for insurance?

As a comparison - running costs in Ireland:
Road Tax: 1080 euro / annum
Insurance: 370 euro (fully comp assuming 45 yr old male with 6 yrs no claim bonus and full driving licence)
Diesel: 1.41 euro / litre

Trying to figure out if there would be much of a saving switching it to UK?

It'll work out much cheaper

Non facelift D2 is £285 stg road tax, facelift is more i understand, around the 400 mark
Deisel in UK, like NI is dearer than petrol, ROI is other way round, not that the chancellor is getting his arm in

You will have to import the vehicle, DVA swansea website will tell you the costs, it used to be a percentage of the value

Insurance as a rule will be cheaper too, as Mainland is a good 40 percent lower than NI, and as i understand it, ROI is dearer again

cheers

51 & 05 plate TD5 Discovery

tax £285 per year for both pre and post facelift, (think its cheaper if Pre March 2001)

Diesel £1.31 litre

Insurance £199 fully comp 49 year old, loads of NCB

So if mine is a May 2003 (facelift) what would the road tax be? Thanks

It's such a rip-off, mine is registered June 2001 on a Y and i pay £285 yet if it had been registered 3 months earlier it would be £230!

Yip

And no difference in vehicle.

Its a joke as two vehicles built one after another could have different tax. One lies in a dealers yard till after March 01 and one doesnt.
Another fine example of stealth tax on the motorist

Just one thing - the tax tables I referred to talk about registered date not manufactured. You would presumably have to re-register it so that may well have a significant effect.......

:(Rip off is the right word for road fund license

Talk about a Rip Off.....I pay 1080euro road tax (approx. £820) in Ireland. That's why we call it "Rip Off Republic".

So it seems it may be worth changing my Disco to a UK plate for the year I'm there.

Does anyone know off hand what is the procedure and associated costs with doing that?

You have to export it from ROI, then import into UK

Should be piles of info on Google, its a very common thing between ROI and NI,

even ringing a dealer in the Dundalk area would be an idea, they would be doing it regularly
