I have loaned my 90 to a family member who's own vehicle is off the road. Got it back for a night to do some stuff and went to put some fuel in and could smell Kero from the tank. I know he has some lying around as I got him some from a mate who was getting rid of a tank full. I gave it to him for his heating, not to put in my landy. I know it is less lubricating and burns at a higher temp than derv, so dropped 20ltrs of VO in the tank. I normally run it on 50/50 derv/VO. Not too chuffed with him at the mo....

I'd not have bulked it up with VO but put a litre of motor oil into it - that way it increases the lubricity but not the quantity of fuel you want to get rid of.

It will be fine, get it as low as you can and then brim it with derv. My concern is VOSA - the engine will be fine.

If it was my worry I would set off tonight for a drive and just run it till the red light comes on, if the fuel in the tank was free anyway it's not that big a problem to use it all and it keeps you safe.

Better give the exhaust a good clean too .....

They do a "Swab" test too these days

That can at least be better explained in an off road vehicle - claim it was used off road for a couple of weeks or something and was run on red and kero - say the tank was drained before going back on the highway.

I nearly bought a Disco once, it came with a FULL tank of red in it as it had just been towing trailers round a farm for the past year or so, I didn't buy it, not because of that right enough, but that at least I could explain quite easily, if VOSA looked back and saw the rural farm address it was kept at before.

VOSA or DVSA as it is now , arent the ones that are interested in duty evasion , thats HMRC who are very short of money at the moment due austerity so are very keen to show how much good value they are :(

Its an all round bugger this one. But good advice from all as usual. Thanks guys.

Going to be up front with him and tell him its not on. Can't take it off him as he would be up **** creek without wheels. He can run it empty and fill to the brim. It needs a service soon anyway so new filters will be fitted. Just have to cross fingers and go for it.

yu can ask for an assurance he wont do it again before yu let him borrow it again

Spoke to him tonight. Sorted without any drama. Felt like I was giving him a row and didn't feel comfy with that. As I said, he has done a lot for me. This is no silly wee boy I am talking about here. He was a champion stock car driver in his day and owned and ran a breakers yard most of his adult life. Retired now but a great guy who I have a lot of time for. Glad its sorted....I hope.

It's VOSA or whatever they are called that pull you round here looking for the stuff. They usually have an HMRC inspector with them or report to them.

Don't worry too much about residual kero in the system, fuel contamination happens all the time. If you think that petrol is 100% petrol or diesel 100% diesel you would be mistaken.

If a tanker hauls a load of JetA1 to Heathrow then it's used to take diesel to a BP they have not scrubbed the tanks and lines. OK it is only a trace amount in a very large quantity but it's there.
