Hi All
Seen and read 100's of threads on FL1 Transmissions on the Forum, but none explain the noise I get?

Difficult to describe, but here goes :D
Constant Pitch grinding type, not a high pitch whine or low rumble.
Bit like the sound you get when your discs pads are almost on the metal :confused:

I Don't get any clonking, juddering, vibration at all in any form at any speed.

BUT this sound starts as soon as you move off, is loudest at 15mph and all but disappears over 40mph and is the same pitch regardless of speed.
Is not affected by what gear I am in - clutch in or out? Turning, or under load/include? (tow a 300kg Trailer and that does make any difference)
Seems to be coming from under the gear lever/console, but difficult to say for sure.

Doesn't seem to be coming from the IRD, and I don't get any of the known issues that I have read about for IRD's (whining, clonking, rattling jumping etc..)
I have replaced the VCU Bushes (good quality ones) and the Front Prop Gaitor was split so had that changed....
Rear Diff Bearings seem sound.
(Kumho AT 215/75/15 Tyres, almost new on front 80% on the back)

I suspect Front prop CV or similar, if the Gaitor was shot it's possible that the CV Joint may be US?) but may be the VCU.
May be a wheel bearing but the sound seems to central?

p.s. am going to take the prop off, (front first then back) to see if that isolates the issue.

Otherwise the motor drives superb! :D

Anyone else had similar?
 
Duno what year your motor is, but is the recommendation not to put new tyres on the rear and used on front?

Noises can travel through suspension/chassis and appear to come from somewhere else - I had a rattle start that I thought was the rear exhaust box dropped off its hangar, only for the IRD to go bang a mile later!

If direction doesn't make any difference, I'd suspect brakes binding a bit or tyres. Your analysis of the prop CV makes sense though, was it greased when you replaced the gaitor?

Tyre swap first today I think :) fingers crossed that helps.
The same tyres have been on car for some time, but the rears were more worn that the back ones when I got it. fronts have hardly worn at all :confused:
But still plenty of wear on both. (All exactly the same make, and correctly inflated at 28psi)

Agree with what you say about noises, could be coming from anywhere.
Seems odd that I don't get any of the IRD type symtoms, and as I said it runs like a dream otherwise?

BUT... I do get a rattle from just under the gear lever, (in or out of gear when idling at about 1,000rpm) If I push the gear lever left or right (depending on its position) it stops?
Could this be connected???

Assume Prop CV was greased when changed, but I had the VCU Bushes changed at the same time... ummmmmmmmmm
 
And a massive hole in your wallet.... :D

Oh don't remind me - had a bit of a run with it lately:

New Lower Front Wishbones inc. Bushes/ARB Links/Turbo Hoses (big improvement)/Front Discs and Pads etc... plus not so long ago a New Alternator and Crankcase Breather Filter (BMW)

It is an 02 3 Door TD4 with 108k, Black with Roof Bars, so I expect some age related wear'n'tear - but has been more than I expected.....

Engine, Clutch (new) and Gearbox spot on, very tidy body and interior.
So worth hanging onto..... just dread another large bill :rolleyes: :eek:

from a motor that is ideal for me, tows well, roomy, OK for my dodgy back too...

Rattles and noises in general are difficult to diagnose on the forum.

When you say in or out of gear, does this mean you are not moving?

Presumably if it stops when you hold/move the gear stick its something to do with the gear linkage. Couple of thoughts though..

Don't know how the exhaust is routed on a TD4, but in general they go close to the gear shift linkage - maybe something resonating through?

The lower engine mount/damper does perish, maybe its going and is causing a rattle at that rev range?
 
Get onto ebay and buy a mechanics stethoscope, get the car up off the ground and have a lusten, mine saved me a fortune as I was told by agarage the diff was bugfered on my freelander 2, turned out it was just a drive shaft bearing

Doesn't matter if moving or not, only noticeable from idle to about 1,200rpm. Doesn't make any difference if in or out of gear.
Yes, when I push the lever left or right it stops....
Returning when I next idle.
Think it must be the linkage, will investigate and report back.

Sure it isn't anything too serious, I don't get any IRD/VCU/Rear Diff Symptoms, leaning towards from Prop CV Joint?
