Did you check the engine mounts? After I had changed all on the front I went to the garage last year, saying that I was still having trouble and that as everything was changed already the only bit I could think of were the engine mounts. They came back with front lower one as far as I remember. At least one of the two bones it was plus the bolts.

In my case, the front rubber (NR 6 in the picture) had
play in the aluminium bushing. I had it pressed in again, but the fit of the bushing was probably not good.
Then I had a problem with the right engine bearing (hydral bearing). It was not properly screwed into the bodywork because a special spanner is needed.
Both knocking noises were very difficult to localise.

Is that the big rubber "bulb" that is the engine mount?

My car failed its WOF (MOT) on that once, so I got a new replacement (Bearmach) and installed it - passed the WOF, but the engine/car vibrated like mad. So I took it off and put the original (which looked in perfect condition) back on, changed WOF garages and its passed every time since (at least 5 or 6 years) at 6 monthly WOFs.

That just used standard spanners/sockets to fit though - but it is an early L Series, the later ones were a different part.
 
Well from what I can gather engine mounts are fine, and I replaced the wishbone suspension and bushes and drop links and track rod ends and now yesterday I replaced the rear diff front bush just incase but still no joy, it’s knocking like hell and wheel is skipping over bumps. Tomorrow we’re replacing the shock as I’ve got a new one and hoping to the Land Rover gods it cures the problem, everyone has said the shock looks fine but as I’m running out of options now it’s the next logical thing to replace. I’ll keep updating but so far it’s stumped everyone as it all looks fine and nothing has any play and yet something is clearly loose or broken badly. But at the same time I can’t keep replacing parts, it’s getting expensive now and the funds just aren’t there anymore.
 
Well we’re so far though, cold et and windy but scuppered by the track rod end which despite changing a few weeks ago now seems welded in there. Going to have to cut it off and replace

Problem solved at long last, this was the shock we removed from f/n/s. As you can see it had totally given up, took a lot of abuse to get it out but between me and the wife the new one is in and the noise has now ceased.

I just want to take this opportunity to say a massive and heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped, all your comments large and small were taken on board and explored and it’s thanks to you guys and Andyfreelandy that we decided to have a go ourselves at doing most of the work. It’s just goes to show what you can accomplish if your willing to have a go, I only have basic tools, nothing fancy or expensive but with all the parts we have fitted not only have we gained valuable knowledge but saved hundreds in garage costs.

Been away for a few days but was wondering how it was going.
You had a very strange fault. The shock was absorbing when bounced but obviously made a noise over rough roads and also made the steering jump so was letting go at times.
The gas has gone but does the centre piston offer resistance when pushed and pulled??

Be interesting to know what made the flapping noise that sounded like a rotation item rather than a bounce.

So, please add 'Solved' in the title and it helps others when looking for similar faults and reduces the 'blind alleys' that you go down !!

How did you compress the spring and what was top bearing like ? Sometimes you have a sod of a fault that can only be found by elimination. And you had it !! Strictly speaking shocks should be replaced in pairs but leave that to you !!

So there is some resistance when pushing and pulling but not much, next time I visit I’ll bring it with so you can see for yourself. I’m ordering the other shock in a day or so and the vcu also!

I bought some heavy duty coil spring clamps so clamped it up when I removed it and then took the top off which looked fine. Then Just reversed the process. I should give credit to jo, the wife, she’s been under the car as much as me with tools fixing it in the rain and cold.

how do I add solved? Tried to do it earlier but couldn’t figure out how.

On the Freelander up to 2000, a rubber bearing was attached to the body with 2 screws.
At that time, the world was still okay in terms of price.
But then came the hydro bearing----- I don't know where the hydro is (a broken one from a slaughtered vehicle was also simply rubber) but if LR thinks it has to earn more________

Now is the time you need to be fookin careful! This engineering success is contagious and you'll be taking on all jobs small and large, wondering why you ever used a garage and spending far to much time on LZ getting and giving advice :D

Thank you everyone, goes to show with a bit of willing and the help and advice of others how much you can achieve. My spanner’s are basic cheap ones, my breaker bar was a bit of old scaffolding pole I cut down my socket sets are all pretty much broken but we got there. Yes by the way it’s my surname.
