Hi all. Just bought a freelander 98 3dr manual 1.8. Was told that it has been noisy for years (independant verification on this) Took it to my local garage (independant) who tested wheel bearings. Which are fine. (ramp and jacked running through gears). No real noise outside we could pin point but really loud inside. Mechanics all baffled. Anyone any ideas??

From 5 mph + loud growl rumble that sounds like wheel bearing noise. Deffo bearing or transmission noise. Gets quieter the faster i go. Clutch in - no difference. Corber - no difference. Just that damn growl. I know that 4x4's are louder but this is a bit too loud..

Also (just a thought) but does anyone offer a sound proofing kit for under carpet etc for these ?

And how easy is it to fit a hardtop to a softtop?

its done 54000 miles by the way

its really nuffin to worry about its probably just a little bit of hard rubber in a tyre or maybe a little rough spot on the shocker piston.. wont cost you anything.. its a gaylander thay fix themselves for free.

My mech thinks not. Sounds like its coming from o/s front but also d/s front.

Is there any way of checking these items out without giving my bank manager an opportunity to rub his hands with glee???

Wife's had a 98 1.8 5door for 18months and despite most things going wrong with it from time to time it has performed consistently noisily since we have had it. Worried about noise at first but basically put it down underpowered engine trying to pull the lump along. Does get quieter the faster it goes, but then bits start to fall off the quicker it goes so can't win. Wife is on third drivers side mirror in 18months. Is this a record?

thats ya problem GMP - yu need to fit a new door mirror - replacing with a record (or even a CD for that matter) doesnt work nearly so well.

my V6 "rumbled" as it was going along - replaced tyres with factory Dunlops - much betta.

Quick tho I am, to denigrate poor Hippoo design - yu cant really blame that for ya missus leavin' them in hedges ans walls tho - can ya. Maybe yu need retractable ones

Indeed no, though only after mirror no. 2 did I discover that she did not realise that you could pull the mirrors back when trying to get through tight spaces

. To be fair no.3 was someone else's fault

yer - ickle vertical bumbers to take the odd knock - all chrome plated 'n stuff..

thems woz the days wen cars had chassis' and all the shock of an accident went straight thro ya head wen it hit the windscreen.

I happen I do lad. My tractor has crumple zones................they build them into other vehicles.
