Yep. Bigger tyres rotate less so your speedo and odo will be low. This needs to be factored in to get a true mpg.

thought as much, upto 336 so far with about 1/4 tank left so seems my mpg hasnt altered much with bigger tyres either, but mainly been big motor way runs not piddly little shop runs.

Or £1.76 per minute so not so bad, as u can go a long way in a couple of minutes at 155mph
Now days I put in over £100 every four or so hours when I go on a long road trip

In my "youth" I once crossed Belgium without dropping below 150mph - on a Kawasaki ZZ-R 1100.

My last TDi 300 auto a 1998 model achieved 33mpg on average over 16,000mls of ownership. This included a trip to the Sahara, day to day running and motorway trips.
She was serviced to within an inch of her life, tyre pressures checked regularly - 33 front, 38rear - de-EGR'd, de-Catted, std road tyres.
My first Disco, a '93 TDi 200 gave 36mpg on day to day running, 40 on a run and a best-ever 46mpg !!!!!

In my "youth" I once crossed Belgium without dropping below 150mph - on a Kawasaki ZZ-R 1100.
In my Yoof I had a Tiger100 which may have seen 80mph a lot slower than my mates Norton 650 SS 120mph and with me on the back, thats when we wasn't kicking hell out of the Mods.

I have recently bought a 1995 Disco ES Auto 5-door and is thrilled about it. It drives very smooth and I love the simplicity of the car
However, I read in the manual that the fuel economy at 55mph should be around 36mpg.
I am not doing anything close to that. And that is eventhough my daily drive is 30 miles to work and 30 miles back on dual carriage roads and A roads. I have one roundabout and one traffic light, otherwise it is straight forward driving. I do not have a heavy foot at all and try to drive economical but I am still only averaging about 23mpg - that seems a far cry from 36mpg.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or is there something I need to check on the car? (Tire pressure is ok and tires are ok).

Hi Kenneth, here are a few pointers for improving your mpg:
1. Cruising speed max 60mph;
2. Tyre pressures 33 front 36 (or more) rear;
3. Check that none of the brakes (inc the handbrake) are dragging;
4. Put in a new air filter;
5. Give the car a thorough service, all oils and filters;
6.Clean out the fuel sedimenter.
7. Grease the prop u/j's.
You're looking to do anything and everything to reduce drag and improve efficiency.

Thanks for all the pointers. Have just changed oil, diesel and air filter, as well as the oil and done the tires - still same mpg :-(
Have not cleaned out the fuel sedimenter nor greased the prop u/j's. Will have a good with these over the weekend.

We managed to get 32.7 MPG over the 500 miles of our trip up Norf -
to Barnoldswick then across to Skipton, down to Selby - overnight there and back home to London ...
all in a 300TDi manual 98 Disco - normal driving style
If yours is an auto box it'll make a big difference

Or as swmbo says.mpg, it does what it does, its a brick on wheels with the aerodynamics of a house.
