I have recently bought a 1995 Disco ES Auto 5-door and is thrilled about it. It drives very smooth and I love the simplicity of the car :)

However, I read in the manual that the fuel economy at 55mph should be around 36mpg.

I am not doing anything close to that. And that is eventhough my daily drive is 30 miles to work and 30 miles back on dual carriage roads and A roads. I have one roundabout and one traffic light, otherwise it is straight forward driving. I do not have a heavy foot at all and try to drive economical but I am still only averaging about 23mpg - that seems a far cry from 36mpg.

Has anyone else had a similar experience or is there something I need to check on the car? (Tire pressure is ok and tires are ok).

I get about 23mpg in mine. The good news is, whatever I bolt on, whatever I carry, however I drive, I get the same.

The mantra is - Smiles per gallon, not miles per gallon! :D:D:D
 
How do u know fuel economy at 55mph is around 36mpg, D1s don't have a computer to tell you unlike modern vehicles.
Your average is low for a Tdi auto, assume its a Tdi, if you see what other diesel owners get in the Forum.
 
On a good run at about 50mph I can get high 20's but normal about town running etc and my 5 miles each way to work I am only getting low 20's.

I put 75 lts of bio in and get just under 300 miles for that, just worked that out on a calculator and its 18mpg :eek: or is my maths bad?

Best I look to see if I have a leak :confused:
 
thing with a disco is you get bad MPG but its always bad no matter what you do as WLM says

I get 400 on average from my tank and that includes ragging it a bit as well as sensible motorway miles at 55mph

36 is a lie………look at 33 max with road tyres etc and 26 ish normally, also roof racks etc will drag it down massively
 
if i drive my manual as carfully as i can and realy force myself to behave i can get 25/27 round town maybe 30 on the motorway if i do 55mph, usually autos arnt as good mpg wise around town but should be very little differance on a tidy run
 
Well with my last disco (1998 xs tdi) I was getting 30+ mpg which I thought was very good compared with most people's

With my current disco (1996 tdi), I am getting 25-28 mpg which is dissappointing but still not that bad. I plan to give her a good service soon, and I'm hoping that a bit of love, care, and lubrication, will increase it by a few MPG.

By the way, I always have the radio on (doubt that makes a difference), always have the blower on (not sure if that makes a difference), rarely have my windows open (I know this can make a difference), and my tyre pressures vary from 26psi to 40psi (which doesn't seem to effect the economy too much).
 
About 23 out of my auto on average but last holiday with half towing a 23' caravan and half countryside miles I got about 16. I'm glad it's not just me :). It's the price you pay for a big comfy auto, but there again I tend to walk lots.
 
I have a 300tdi manual and drive 70 mile round trip to work each day and getting 29mpg which is 60% dual carriageway and the rest through town. I dont go over 60 on the dual carriageways very often. Not sure how much the auto box would affect it but have you changed all your oils filters etc, blanked off the egr, de-cat? All should improve fuel economy.
 
I'm getting around 400 - 420 to a tank.

First thing to check is your driveway & hope nothing is leaking onto it!
 
The "book" mpg figures are taken on a rolling road i.e. no air resistance and you are driving a brick

no car will meet the "quoted" figure as these are manufacturers selling points
 
My wifes Merc with a 2.5 diesel with twin turbos was indicating 63mpg at 60mph the other day but then it's engine is still being run-in :D
My brothers Jag XF does only only 9mpg but it was four up and doing 155mph. :D
 
My disco averages 9mpg no matter if i drive at 50/60/70/77 and same in town but thays because its very very broken and a v8 auto haha
 
i seemed to get between 400-450 on a tank full, went down abit with veg, stayed same on bigger AT tyres, went down on Insa's (expected) stayed same with roof bars winch winch bumper more weight basically.

if 33's alter your speed by 10% so 30mph on clock is 33 on gps then would the fuel be altered by 10% too, so 400 from tank is 440?
