right, on me gearbox tunel cover , series 2a, thers a rubber bung thing in the passenger side of the alloy cover ? what is it for and has anyone else got one, its not close to a filler or dip , or anything else? more to the point where can i get another one from ? its about 4" dia and domed

is on the opposite side from the overdrive? as in exactly opposite, so that the over drive could be on that side if it was left hand drive.
 
Early gearboxes had a gearbox dipstick on the passenger side , ( mine used to have one ) , yours must be a later box , but they kept the hole in the cover .

yeah seemed strange , i dint have a stick no where near it ! but i do remember seeing one years ago with it in the passenger side, like you said
 
I saw a landy in a breakers a bit back, wi a hydraulic winch on the front, and it looked like the pto control lever for it came out of that hole where the bung is, either a convenient place at the time or maybe its intended for it.
Yer could allways snip a square out of a scrap panel, stick some cack on it and pop rivit it over yon 'ole, yer never gonna use it.
