Hi guys
For rebuilding a disco 200tdi engine can i use normal every day silicone or does it have to be for engines as in the past i have used RED Hemertite for sumps, timing case-block and flywheel housing-block but the Haynes book is saying RTV silicone.

Also when i removed the ladder frame and sump there was no gaskets used but what looks like silicone, i have just received a bottom end gasket set but i don't see a sump or ladder frame gasket, should there be or are these gaskets separate items or do they just use silicone

check with someone more knowledgeable than me that RTV is right for the ladder frame, as i cant remember exactly

cheers, when i thought about it i couldnt remember if it was the ladder frame or back of the block that i used RTV, or both. Cheers flos

Any automotive shop sells it but I got mine from my local LR Indy in a grease gun sized cartridge because it was cheaper but I had loads left over so I filled a few gaps in my garage roof with the remainder.

For information. RTV means "Room temperature vulcanisation". RTV silicone is cured when exposed to moist air and gives off a odour similar to that of Vinegar when curing.
