Evening all; not the best of days really, for my '93K RRC LSE. Drove 2 miles up the road and arrived home on the back of a recovery truck nearly 2.5 hours later, lost all forward and reverse drive. Selecting D (or lower gears) or R and trying to drive it results in an almost metallic whirring sound with pretty much no movement. Hi-N-Lo also not able to select. Any thoughts gratefully received ... pound signs flashing past my eyes at the moment, however she's too good to break!!

What were you doing when you lost all drive. Give us a clue n you stand more chance of help.

The only dual mass relating to a RRC is the two fellas needed to push it up onto a recovery trailer

I am assuming the recovery trucker driver checked fluid levels before recovering it for you?
 
can you feel clutch packs engage ,does rattle go up with gear changes,check oil by draining some out ,out put shaft in t/box is prone to stripping splines coupled with front axle fault is not uncommon cause of loos of drive
 
me go for output shaft of gearbox/ input gear of transferbox..espically if it cloncked when putting into drive or reverse before it gave up

cheap to replace,can be done insitu i think..(not sure on on b/w transferbox,but defo no problem on lt230,just remove plate at back and away you go.have done this myself)

out put shaft of gearbox has a bolt in center,unscrew and it can be pulled out along with input gear of transferbox...assume same on b/w?not sure though...
 
Thanks guys; was on-road driving at the time. When setting off had to apply more revs than would usually and once it had got into 3rd it drove happily at 45 to 60. Slowed down into 40, then 30 zone and felt unsteady as if it was having to rev more than it should; pulled away from roundabout and made almost whizzy/whistling noise as it struggled to pull away. Made a few hundred yards, then lost further drive, so managed to pull into layby. Recovery guy didn't check levels no, although I did before we drove off as had put 1/4 litre auto trans fuel in as was showing as just above minimum level.
When we unloaded it managed to push it into the field with brother steering and car engaged in reverse. Did feel like car was driving itself albeit with some brute strength (!) assistance.

not posssible,borgwarner has an epicyclic gear set instead of input gear with no plate ,so would have to remove transfer box ,but would be rare as shaft is well lubricated in bw
 
drain the oil out gearbox and transfer and see one has metal in it... where abouts are Midnight Bear?
 
Notwithstanding the advice you've had re. the T/box - if it's the slush-box itself then, according to the workshop manual (fault diagnosis) it's going to need a pressure test in order to eliminate/confirm the cause. Does the car drive if you select D1 etc. also what's the condition of the fluid/filter?
 
ok..bugger ..thats a shame,cos that would have been easy fix.
 
thanks guys; it won't move under any gear selection and there's a clunk when I put it back in park. going to have to wait until next week now due to work commitments; fingers crossed will identify it soon and get the beast back on the road! :5bdriving:
 
clunk when putting it into park could indicate loss of drive in transfer box allowing gear box out put shaft to turn so castleated wheel is moving when park pawl is pushed into it
 
Viscous coupling and front diff replaced; ouch! Plus side, drives like a different car!! Thanks for all the advice; much appreciated!
