Hi All,

Does anyone know a specialist RR V8 mechanic / tuner in the west country. I'm based in West Dorset so can venture to East Devon, South Somerset or Northern France (okay maybe my P38 won't fit on my little zodiac!)?

I have a 1995 P38 4.6 V8 and it needs some expert TLC

- Out of interest: I get a noticeable juddering from around 45mph in 4th gear, so I and thought it was the 4th gear lockout 'slipping', but now I think it's happening in other gears so I'm either losing the whole box or it's a mis-fire / timing / fuel / air mass issue -

Many thanks

L

LanTrac 4x4 in Semley close to Shaftesbury in Dorset and there's another one in Melksham though can't remember their name. Do a search for Land Rovers in Wiltshire and it should pop up.

I think Grrrrrrr means do an oil change and add some lucas transmission fix, will take some time to work its magic but might be worth ago.

Thanks both, I'm having a box man give it a once over to make sure the housing isn't cracked and they will flush while in there.

Easy things first, have you given the driveline a check over? UJs etc
Check none of the tyres have deformed or have uneven wear

Could be its a nice cheap fix

Thanks - that would ideal, but the juddering is too uneven and sporadic for tyres, and doesn't feel / sound like a shaft slipping - though that would explain why it's worse under load, but not why it only happens in fourth gear. Pulling away up a steepish hill should reproduce that, but it only starts (or is properly noticeable) at speed when changed up into 4th. Weirdly the auto transmision man said he has come across a similar issue and it was old spark plugs breaking down under the load up in 4th, causing a misfire. I have checked the plugs they 'look' okay...

I have used Kerbside auto in / near tolpuddle, he did a great job for me and a lot less than quoted elsewhere. Main ball joints and new exhaust

Call Steve, top chap, interesting place too :)

Thanks All - It turned out the juddering wasn't a transmission probelm, but old Champion sprk plugs and one, the NSF the core had fallen out - into the cylinder presumably - so was running on a max 7 cylinders. 8 fresh NGK's has fixed the juddering with the 4th Gear Lock-up, but now highlighted the slight misfire / engine running issues. I'm hoping it might have somethig to with this - The air mass looks it's been replaced from a breakers? With the low idle speed I'm pretending this is going to be the issue, and not say, worn cams... (btw compression test on the NSF cylinder showed plug core hadn't damaged valves etc) - the game's afoot!

Odd how it only did it in 4th to start with.
It was the extra load on the engine with the lockup... I know... but probably (definitely) my highly tuned ear didn't notice the misfire when i was trundling around... what can I say most of my other dozers are diesels, so tappetty irregular rattling is the morning chorus. And my SIII 109 2.25 petrol sounds more like a diesel than a diesel, especially in the am.
