Hi everybody, I recently bought a 1988' RR with a EFI V8 fitted, it needed a new engine fitted so i went about and done this, now im having problems starting it . . . Sorta goes like this .. .

Start it up with the distributor as far clockwise at will go, it starts but wont rev without popping an all sorts, turn the dizzy all the way anticlockwise while its running and it returns to a smooth idle and will rev up fine, turn the engine off try and restart it but it wont until you turn the dizzy all the way clockwise again

The only thing i can think it be is the dizzy setup as i set it all up by hand and not with a timing light etc . . . . . . .

probably need to set it up properly... but what else did you bodge when you fitted the engine cos I expect they aren't helping it start either...

Thats the only thing I bodged ;)

I fitted a new inlet gasket after deciding the original was knackered, the previous owner however has rigged up the fuel pump to s switch (apparantley it wasnt working off the ignition) the wires which run to the distributor itself have been fiddled with so cant imagine this is helping much :mad:

Apart from that everything else was done properly, i only bodged it because its been sat in my garage for nearly 2 months without an engine and i was desparate to get it running

Ok ive been out and im pretty sure the timing is out, however you try and fix one thing something else crops up, i took the top plenum off to give the mating surfaces a clean as i dont remember doing it when i put it all back together, now its all back together when i try and rev it it just cuts out unless i pull the throttle back slowly even then its popping and farting alot !!:(

Fancy meeting you here....!

Fancy that indeed :D:D

Sounds like you might have a stretched timing chain, I've had a similar problem with my 3.9. The other thing to check is that the vacuum and mechanical advance are both working properly, it would also be worth checking that the air gap is correct between the pick up and reluctor inside the dizzy.

While you fiddlin, check there are no air leaks on the inlet side of things - you may have to take the plenum off again bu tif you do make sure you give it a thorough cleaning. check all your vacuum pipes/hoses. What sort of shape are the plugs and leads in?

PLugs were cleaned before re-fitting and the leads are new, i ran it again yesterday and it was running lovely, i even managed to drive it around the block a few times, then as the engine warmed up more it ran rougher and rougher until it eventually cut out :(

Hi Mate, ill try to help out, just had a similar problem on my rr efi, probally best to read the post first, here is the link...

just a quick thought, have you checked the large rubber pipe that connects the air metering unit to the inlet manifold,on the right hand side of engine bay,if this is not fitted right or has any holes in,it will never run right,if this is faulty the car could run better when cold, which seems to sound right, anyway, ill keep an eye on this thread, keep us informed, chris.

Cheers chris will take another look at the weekend ad let you know :D

Well a small update, today i decided to change the coil, after connecting the replacement up it would start and run but only if i held the key it the start position  I took a look at the wiring and had a thought, i swapped one wire from the -ive to the +ive it fired up straight away and ran the best it has since i installed the damn engine :D:D:D before you oculd move the dizzy around with mixed effects now it idles the same wherever the dizzy is :D:D:D

HOWEVER ..................

This has brought another issue to light, once i have started it, if i put it into R or D the engine dies down and splutters and doesnt respond to the Accelarator, if i switch it off and start it up again it idles lovely and revs fine until it goes into R or D and sometimes even if you turn the steering wheel ?
