Any Dexron IID or Dexron III will do the job. You could try adding some Lucas Transmission Fix.
Also worth checking the transfer box ECU, can you select Low Range?

I thought dexron III was for later models, mine is a 1996 2.5dse, it works in low and high from cold like you suggested. think it needs to go lol, bought new battery for it yesterday 100quid, now CL don't work from either fob, tried re sync them but still not working and to cap it all SRS light now staying on

SRS and FOB problem was caused when you removed the battery.
Sounds like the gearbox has given up, Ashcroft transmissions for a recon. Not that expensive.

thanks for that Datatek I think i'll need the torque converter too because there not all the same, they must correspond with the last 3 digits on the second number plate mine is the 4hp22eh ....768, correct me if i'm wrong but its not advisable to fit old torque converter to replacement box

Contact Ashcroft transmissions if you want a new torque convertor.
A second hand ZF4HP22 is a gamble, they are working close to the limit on the diesel.

come on theres plenty of auto specialists out there and its surely worth getting a price to fix your own box first

Personnaly I've had bad expereiences with so called auto specialists, I'm sure there are good ones but the trouble is finding one local.

One day, when I get the box out of the doner car, I will take it apart and it won't matter if I feck it
I plan to buy a 4HP24 and fit it at some point.

I use photo's as I go but I assure you I can feck it.you cant feck it only forget how it goes back together ,you want to see some customers faces when i strip a box in a few minuets with a 3/8 battery gun and put it all in a heap

I have found a box its a THOR gearbox at £150
Serial number for this is
4HP 22
1787623
010 (767) is same number on mine
This has done only 92k and warranty for 3 month
is it any good for my car a p38 2.5 dse as I don't know what a THOR is
