Hi folks.

Im a big classic fan, I have two, a late '93 and slightly earlier '89 3.5 EFI, The later developed a noisy front axle. Any help with diagnosis would be grateful.

The noise only really happens as I slow down almost to a stop (less than 5mph), and sounds like an steel rod/ bar being hit with a metal head lump hammer! Driving i dont tend to hear anything. It makes this noise as i'm almost stationary regardless of gear selection and steering action.
Seems to be coming from axle driverside'ish. all oils and swivels have been checked and are fine.

Any ideas?

cheers, Joe

... to add, I should come clean and admit I've changed the wheels on it recently, taking off some P38 style ones and putting the correct body coloured vogue alloys on. Though I've checked I didnt do anything silly!

Hi SpudH...So, this would give me rear wheel drive only but eliminate front prop issues?? have i got this right?

The P38's should not have fitted without mods. Any chance the nuts are different or there are spiggot rings still on there.

The main reason I took those alloys off (look like P38 types) was the spare wouldn't fit in the rear properly...and i wanted the original type alloys on there. I even put the P38 looking ones back on..to no avail unfortunately.

Yeah, it'll eliminate a lot of driveline issues.

I'm trying to think what can make a banging at low revs that isn't going to have it vibrating like a good un' at higher speeds.

Hang on, I just re-read your post, are you on the brakes when the noise comes?

What year Classic have you? is it fitted with ABS or TC?
TC equipped RRC's make a loud banging noise when the TC is operating. My RRc which has failing ABS also makes the same noise when I'm on the brakes

this '89 doesnt have ABS. Its the same noise regardless whether on the brakes or not. I also checked the security of calipers, lines etc.
I'm thinking CV joint or prop.???

Sorry SpudH, yeah the one and only time I ever been above 60mph was on M62 motorway, and there was a 'drumming' sound and a bit of vibration going on....but not a massive amount... it seems to go as soon as i press the loud pedal, and get worse as i lift off, particularly going above about 30mph

really sounds like a tap tap like a metal bar hitting the front axle when almost stationary tho

Yeah, sorry, an auto. Tried coasting in all gears and even neutral selected in transfer box...no change in noise unfortunately.

Cheers. I shall be removing the front prop this weekend and start eliminating options I guess

mine was a banging on each auto shift on the overun as the box chages down, they recon its play in the front diff, so i have given them one to fit and it will be back on mon or tues

Ok fett. let me know how you get on. I've even started looking at front diffs, but I'll go for the cheaper options first. UJ bearings are less than £10 each I think.
cheers, Joe

I'm the relative newbie here...but, have you checked out the differential?

I have a 94' LWB and just recently ran into some loud grinding/banging noises from my front axle area. Turned out my front differential was in dire need of replacement. It made rattling noises at higher speeds but turning/driving at slow speeds caused some serious metallic banging noises with driving that could be best described as suddenly slowed or halting with grinding/banging noises.

Hope this helps!
