Hi guys. I'm currently fitting a p38 4.6 v8 into my 90. 2 questions (in sure there will b more) but any suggestions on what to do re brake servo as the v8 doesn't have a vaccvacuum pump and I'm using the p38 tank so suggestions about what to do with the fuel gauge. Think that's all at the moment. :D 90 is an F reg (1989) btw. Thanks in advance.

Servo feed from inlet manifold has petrol engine creates its own vacuum 👍so doesn't need a vac pump 🔨🔨I would use defender tank and gauge with fuel injection pump from p39 fitted into tank 😄👍👍🔨🔨
 
Ohh and I'd fit a 4.0 not 4.6 has they are bad for bores cracking and pressurising coolant system 🔨🔨🔨😜😜😮💰💰😳
 
I've just fitted a Cummins 6bt in my 90 and had the same problem R.E vac pump, so I've fitted a transit alternator with a vac pump on the back.
Although I believe you can actually get a 12volt electric vac pumps now.
 
Ok. Well the 4.6 is in so thats a done deal. Lol. If it dies then maybe a 4.0 will go in. Will the p38 pump fit in the def tank tho in terms of length etc. Also gonna need as big a tank as I can get. Lol. Will have to investigate the electric vac pumps.

Have had a quick investigate into the electric vac pumps. Not cheap. Is a brake booster pump the same thing?

Also another question, does anyone know what size copper pipe is used for the clutch and what size the unions are for a 89 def master and a disco v8 r380 slave?
 
Is there a way of using the servo from a p38? How do they have power assisted brakes? Not familiar with a p38 brake system.
 
Sorry about all the posts. Another thought, how did the defender v8s do it? Is it possible to use a vacuum pump off one of them?
 
U don't need a vac pump 🔨as I said before a petrol engine creates its own vacuum from inlet manifold u will have a union for a servo hose to fit too and then run it to ure servo 😳simples

As said above, for the brake servo vac all you nee to do is drill the inlet manifold and put a steel pipe fitting into it, this the connects to you vac hose from the brake servo (about 8mm bore iirc) not the same manifold, but something like this

He shouldn't need to drill the manifold, the take of point will already be there for the servo pipe.
 
These photos are of a 3.5efi. The connector you are looking for is on the left hand side of the plenum chamber as you look at the front of the engine.





All you need to do is connect this to the servo with a bit of rubber pipe, job done.
 
Thanks. I'll have a look when I get a chance. Anyone got a solution to the fuel gauge issue? In an ideal world I want to use the rr fuel tank and pump which has a built in sensor and the defender dash. Thinking I might have to go down the aftermarket sender and gauge route. Hoping for a cheaper alternative though. :rolleyes:
