we were getting condensation above us off the canvas. Used to drip off onto our bags/heads in the morning
We dont get any condensation now in the maggiolina.G

Hi Booger - you've got the point exactly, it's the height of the awning that would cause me problems.
As to why not use a normal tent - it would just be usefull when the weathers bad to be able to access all the bits in the back, clothes cooking stuff, food, BEER. Somewhere to stick the bikes overnight etc. So the real answer is just convenience.
I love the Maggiolina concept but all that would provide me is sleeping quarters.

The Oztents are pretty cool, you can access the back of the vehicle, they are easy to set up, and have the advantage that if you are camping for an extended period you can leave the tent and take the vehicle, of course that is only if you are in a place where they won't steel your tent, so that rules out Africa
I'm still getting the Chinese Tent, cause they meet the most of my requirements, and don't cost way too much.
If you still want a Roof Tent after looking at the Oztent, contact these guys Tourer Tent they are local so you can phone, and confirm wether the awning will reach the floor.
The thing I like about a separate awning is that if you just want to grab a nap, or if the ground is muddy, you just put up the top bit. Although camping with dogs you are never really going to stay clean

This was a question I had earlier - can the roof gutters handle the weight my lardy self and another up on the roof? This Brownchurch tent seems to sit on what looks like a pretty standard roof rack with eight pretty standard looking gutter mounts.
I am guessing that the answer is that yes, therefore no need for an external cage or anything fancy?

correct assumption.
You will be fine. LR defenders have a load rating of 75kg (maybe more on ROW defenders? I did hear 150kg from somewhere but this has been disputed) on the roof/gutters but this is in transit on variable terrain. Not parked up on a flat campsite.
I would still prefer to keep roof loadings to a minimum so only have the RTT up top.

A bit late in the day but during my two years in Botswana I had two Eezi Awn tents on my 110 and never experienced any problems. Dont have them opening out on the same side, it's just too close for comfort!!!! I had one opening over the front and the other over the side.
I've been looking on eBay, trying to find a s/h or reasonably priced roof tent... still can't work out why they're so expensive
Anyway, there's some brands I'm not familiar with, and I'm looking for advice I guess...
Any pointers would be great, 'cos I don't want to buy a crappy tent!
