I don't think any of the buggers were promising to reinstate this so voting wouldn't have made much difference.

About the first thing the last lot did when they got in was to axe the rolling exemption, the buggrz.

it was them that introducuced it i think if they were on there on there own things might be abit different, same with fox hunting, but doubt they will **** up there relation with libs for that

wot could they do if everybody refused to pay car tax....

that's not going to happen though, is it? Just as everyone isn't going to stop paying income tax or council tax.

No one likes paying tax, but if you use the road, surely you have to contribute to the upkeep of it? why should you be exempt from your share because you're driving a car over 20 years old?

Tax exemption is intended for historic vehicles, and it's a good thing, but we all know that there are people, particularly land rover drivers, who are abusing this concession by building 90s on series 2 IDs and running them as tax exempt.

If people take the **** like this, then we're more likely to lose historic vehicle tax all together than have it put back on a rolling basis.

I would agree with the first half of that post, if the tax we paid was put into maintaining and repairing the roads, but it isn't. However I do agree with the second part. I think that if you change the specification of the vehicle, i.e different engine type and different suspension type, then it should automatically be registered on a Q plate.

The theory was that historic vehicles use the road much less than every day normal cars so they shouldn't have to pay the same rates. And bugger all of the 'road tax' actually gets spent on the roads in any case so that argument doesn't wash.

I had to sell my SIII because of this - it would have been tax exempt if the rolling exemption hadn't been axed - I could have afforded to keep it and use it on the odd occasions when it was actually working, rather than having to regularly pay out an extortionate amount of money just for the privilege of owning it.

my original point was not to get taxexempt landys everywhere but the fact my car has been destroyed and I have to use a landy goes againsed the grain a little on the cost.Id happily pay for my car but why should i when it just gets busted

Hello, sorry for digging up a old thread but;
I am looking for members to help me bring back the "car tax exemption" since the tories are in and it was originally them who introduced it and it was labour that stopped it. I am personally aiming to whatever i can to bring it back and need car enthusiasts to back me :)
We all know it's hard enough keeping an older vehicle on the road and for those of us who just miss out on the existing exemption it's bloody frustrating but not only that future classics would also benefit so im asking enough people to join to bring it back and see if we do something about it and if needed I'll do what i can with enough people to back it!
The good new is, that in Classic Car Weekly it has been mentioned that car exemption was brought up by the Torries so im jumping at that straight away!

If anyone fancies promoting this on any forum i haven't yet please please do so! I plan on finding the more major forums for classic cars & future classics and since i have a landrover engined Capri, i was advised to put a post up from a friend :)
