There is a MOT exemption date. Most drivers of classic cars still do their own MOT though.

sorry, that's no longer the case. For about four or five years now, once your vehicle reaches 40 years old, it becomes tax exempt. But you have to apply - it isn't automatic. My 1974 88" has enjoyed free tax for three years now.

Currently vehicles are exempt from VED when they are 40 years old & it's a rolling date.
As for MOT the exemption is currently for vehicles manufactured prior to 1st January 1960 but there are further proposals in the pipe-line as the UK has to conform to European rules until such time as we actually leave the EU.

Just taxed my 74 Jensen-Healey yesterday for the princely sum of £0
You need to ask DVLA to change the class of vehicle from PLG to Historic, which you can do after 40 years. Then your reminders will be zero rated.
There is talk of rolling MOTs and I believe a white paper has been approved but nothing has happened yet

ask for a pre-MOT check. same as MOT without the paperwork

I have a 41 year old car tucked up in the garage so in May 2018 when the "classic" non mot status starts for 40 year olds it will be out on the road, only the old weekend when the sun is shining that is, and exempt from mot and tax... Great no more time off to go to a garage with this vehicle ever. 
Will still have to pay for both for the disco, but only tax at the moment for my Jag which also is in the garage now there's salt on the roads.
