Hi

Just wondering about the "correct" set up / positioning of the rocker cover engine breather on a petrol 2 1/4 engine?

On Page 46 of the Series 2 Owners Manual it shows 2 breathing slots in the rocker cover filter cap and Page 26 of the Green Bible, it shows a different set up the rocker cover "cap" having no slots in it?.

As you can see in the attached photo's, Betsy's set up with a "solid" (i.e. no breathing slots in the cap) on the rocker cover cap, but 2 in the Oil Filler Tube.

is this wrong? What impact will this have running this way and would / could it cause any damage to the engine?

OK, this is not a big problem. The setup here is betwixt and between - the top cap you have is for a PCV system and the oil filler cap is from an earlier engine setup.

The big deal here is that you're going to be drawing nice nasty (moist) fumes into the carburettor inlet the way this is set up, rather than the airflow going from the top to the oil-filler/PCV setup as originally designed. The only time this is going to become an issue is when you have conditions when carburettor icing is possible, as the crap from the engine when introduced into the airflow may provide moisture to allow the carburettor throat to ice.

BTDT and it took me a while to figure out, I'll tell you. :)

Weree it me (and it has been) i'd fitr the engine with the closed cap and PCV from a later engine, or replace the top cap with one that is vented. Don't just take the hose off it and plug it - that's a bad idea.

Personally, I like PCV - it keeps the engine cleaner and minimizes the eau de hot oil smell you'll get on a hot day when working the car hard.

Thanks Alan. took me a while to figure out what PCV was - but then Google came to the rescue :)
Looks like more internet shopping then! She appears to be running OK but it is good to check these things.
