Road tax is either based on engine size for older cars and can run into a couple of thousand euro for engines over 3000 odd c.c. Later cars are based on emissions and even a 2 litre petrol or diesel can be a lot more than over here...added to that, most motorways, in the main, glorified dual carriageways are tolled and the ordinary roads are potholed to hell and have no drainage apart from ditches.
The best system by far is to do away with the road tax and put it on the price of fuel. That way, the larger the engine plus the mileage you do, means you pay more due to the extra fuel used. No one gets away with tax dodging and the SORN could be binned.

Yep, good food, good wine, nice wimmin, lots of open space and empty roads, green lanes aplenty if you want them, it's really tough here

Hi Keith.....Due to the greedy property speculators and equally greedy bankers, the country is broke and reliant on handouts from the EU for god knows how many decades to come.
As a result the ordinary Joe Soap is being taxed to the hilt. Most of the new roads that were built were constructed using EU grants or public/private "Partnerships" with the private sector being guaranteed a high percentage of the revenue raised over several years.
Ordinary "A" & "B" roads are left to deteriorate due to lack of funds and are, at best, patched by a repair gang throwing a couple of shovelfuls of gravel into the hole and then pouring tar over it-usually this is patted flat and not rolled. The first truck that drives over it just squashes it out.
Watching the Paddy road repair crews is akin to Fred Karno's Circus !!!

Must be the automatic. Mine, a manual TD4, was registered in July 06 and was £280 last year.

Really? I have a shotgun, no permit needed unless I want to join the chasseurs and I can buy ammo with just a note from the Gendarmerie. They were totally dissinterested in my airgun.Maybe but France has stupidly tight air gun laws!!

Hi John, roads are pretty bad in the UK too despite all the tax
We keep getting told France has a problem, but more new industrial/comercial units have been built and occupied around my area in the last 4 years than in the previous 10 years and the roads are, for the most part, well maintained although they do look a bit like a patchwork quilt.
Last year my 02 auto was the same, 280. Seems not the way, maybe dice

My road tax is €52 per year, historic and no doe or NCT. A lot better than the €3500 they would have wanted when it was a v8!
